Transmission Synchro?
i just brought my 06 xa into the dealer today. its been grinding NASTY into second gear and sometimes it even does it from neutral to 1st. they just called me and said the "synchros" are bad and they need to be replaced. does anybody know what causes the synchros to go bad in only 6000 miles?? seems odd to me. maybe they were just defective.
they won't cover my trans. guess i shouldda had em fix thge synchro's before the clutch that they wouldn't cover went out. now i know they wont cover it with my spec stage 2+ clutch in there. weak suck and a half!!!

same happened to me, but mine was around 2500 miles. The more I read, the more I see it happening to people who like to shift fast... I had a TWM shifter on mine - only to reduce the reach from 4th to 5th, but guess I was shifting fast too - only car with a stick before this one (that I drove regularly) was a V8 mustang.
Dealer replaced my transmission under warranty and asked me to remove the shifter - I did. Mine turned into a nightmare that I'm still dealing with (see my 'fed up with xb' thread if you want the details - they've now had my car 30 or my 75 days of ownership).
I'll never put the short shifter back on my car when I get it back & I'll drive a little more cautiously (not that I drove it hard before).

If you've ever "missed" a powershift into second, the second gear synchros are blown. That's not only with a box, but with all but a few manual transmissions.
And it's important to remember that x series Scions are based on econobox rather than performance parts, so they're not built to take a beating...
My TRD shift kit improved the feel of second gear tremendously- the stock unit was kinda vague, which will lead to missed shifts and synchro damage, while the TRD is notchier, and more positive... heavy shift ***** also improve shifter feel, imo...
The truth, however, is that if you want it to last, you need to play nice- particularly when the vehicle is new, and the driver hasn't yet developed an intimate feel for the machine...

The shifter will cause faster shifts though unless you change your driving style. If the throw from 1st to 2nd is reduced by 40% and you still move your arm/hand the same speed as you did before, you will be shifting faster. I never pictured the xb as being a performance car - I didn't buy the shifter so I could shift faster... I bought it for the shorter throws which resulted in quicker shifts.
After spending a week's pay to replace synchros on a BMW in 1972, I have let the transmissions tell me how they like to be shifted.
Shifting is not like working a switch. During the shift, a lot of complicated things must happen rather quickly. Best to shift in a deliberate manner and let them happen.
