Default Uh oh Whats dat noise?

Driving home 2006 xB 213,000 miles. Bad whining noise from tranny area at about 25 miles to get home will shift from one gear to next so I continue home. Park it. Next morning will not go into gear easily. Takes some effort. And then when in gear will not move will not coast backwards. Then with a bit of gas it will move forward and then coast backwards. If stopped while coasting backwards will not go backwards again until forced forward a little bit. Driveway on a hill which is why I need to coast backwards to get out. Loud whiny noise is gone but there is a noise that goes away when clutch depressed. This is the best car ever made and am hoping for some help in diagnosis of problem.

Thanks.

So when you push the clutch in the noise goes away? i'm having a similar problem. although its more of a squeaking, i think, and I need to just apply the tiniest bit of pressure to the clutch pedal to get it to stop.

Anyway if i had to guess its the throwout bearing.

I was thinking that too. But why would that stop car from coasting back?
Thanks again
