Echo engine into xB??

Default Echo engine into xB??

My engine is fried. Sister took my car, got a call that night that it was dead.

Anyways, found a cheap 2001 Echo motor with low mileage that I want to grab to swap in. My question is, do I need the Echo's ECU to make this work?

Manual 2001 Echo to a Manual 2004 xB.

Yes because the Echos run a 32 bit ECU and the xB runs a "learning" 16bit... you will however need to just use the engine as the transmissions aren't identical

How do I know this?

I tried it myself.

Best bet, use the block and swap all the electronics from your fried motor to your new one.

Ok, I'm a little confused.

Swapping the Echo motor into my xB, use the xB's electronics or find some from an Echo? (The guy I'm getting the Echo motor from pulled it and took the body to a pick n pull so lord knows where the ECU now)

Have you ever pulled an engine before? From a front drive EFI car?

Never, and I don't plan on starting. The guy has already pulled the Engine from the Echo, took the body to a Pick N' Pull.

My mechanic is going to pick up the Echo motor and install it into my xB. The Echo computer isn't with the Echo motor.

Then the motor will do just fine, your mechanic should know what sensors to pull from the old motor to place on the new one... since they are infact the same running gear (1NZFE) it will work swimmingly

Yup, Same Engine. Just use the sensors out of the dead motor and put them in the Echo motor.

The cumulative list is:

- Crank position sensor (on timing chain cover)
- Water temp sensor (on engine head, driver side)
- Cam position sensor (on engine head, driver side)
- Cam oil control valve (on engine head, front by passenger side)
- Oil pressure sensor (front, engine block)
- Knock sensor (front, engine block)
- Crash sensor, little grey block (engine head, front by passenger side)

You may also want to use the flywheel from the dead motor to make sure it mates to the xB transmission properly. Keep the wiring harness and ECU in the xB, you won't need to swap them or anything as long as you move the sensors over.
Also, use all the accessories from the xB and move them to the new engine, these are the alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor and the starter. The power steering pump and A/C compressor unbolt from the engine,
you can leave them hanging with the lines attached without having to disconnect any fluid / coolant lines.

Default Just swapped

Just put a 01 Echo engine into my 06 xA, only sensor I changed was the knock sensor since the Echo uses a single wire instead of a double wire, I also had to take the stud out of the blown xA motor
since the Echo motor uses a screw in knock sensor while the xA uses a slide over a stud knock sensor and a nut to hold it against the block, the stud will screw into the hole that the previous knock sensor was in.

Other than that I didn't have to change anything else like the guy above was talking about.

Also I didn't have to change flywheel etc it was straight swap.
