Default Stock Air Filter vs K&R Air Filter

Is anybody aware of what happens when you swap the stock air filter for a K&N Air Filter? Overheard a conversation about this swap, but am unsure what happens (if anything).

I'm not sure about a "K&R" , but you get better air flow over stock when you swap in a K&N.

Thanks - Yeah, I made a mistake in the name-brand. Couldn't remember (senior moment - and I do mean senior moment as I am 60) the actual name brand. Thanks for the feedback.

Just a better degree of air flow. There's a secondary mesh screen that can be removed as well.

Is there really any benefit to removing the seconday mesh screen? Seems like it's there for safety to prevent junk from getting in there.

I've heard it's for emissions reasons, I don't think you'll gain much but some people remove it anyway.

That secondary mesh screen is part of your FEDERAL MANDATED SMOG CONTROL. It is a charcol filter. remove it and be prepared to deal with the Feds when it comes time to smog ( it can cost you your car), it comes with a hefty fine.

^ Only in states with CARB restrictions. Adding an intake removes the charcoal filter too...

Not really , you will notice that the charcol filter is a FEDERAL requirement , not just the few states that have tighter restristions ( ARB Standards , Air Resources Board Standards , where CARB is California Air Resources Board)

And you will notice , most posters that are reading or showing an interest in this thread , the OP , Me , are all from the Great State of Arnold , oops California.

And not all have the filter ( my 2004 doesn't , never has ). It started in , IIRC 2006.5 .

With a dropin all you really get is peace-of-mind knowing that there's one less maintenance item to service.

What others are saying is they have either removed their charcoal filter or replaced it altogether with a cold-air intake.

Removing the charcoal filter is illegal & will throw a CEL, but which state besides CA bothers to even look (for now)?

The TRD supercharger intake must retain the carbon filter to be CARB legal.

Aside from the dropin, K&N makes a CARB legal version that does add more than the 1 to 2 hp you get from the dropin- Typhoon69-8608TFK

One of the things I love about not living in the state of Arnold, no ARB emission restrictions when it comes to aftermarket emissions. I've never seen one of our cars throw a CEL when the intake is changed (correctly) or the charcoal filter is removed. Personally speaking, the charcoal filter needs to be user serviceable since it is a filter. I mean seriously, have you guys ever seen a self cleaning filter that doesn't need maintenance? Dremel is your friend.

I'll be the one to bump this thread. But How long (years) can a K&N Cone filter be used for (not a drop in, its for a CAI)?
I have had mine for 3 years now, and it has been maintained well. Now much longer can I use it before just buying a new one and start fresh?

Thanks.

Doesn't it have a million mile warranty? or something like that , unless it is damaged you won't need to replace , just clean, oil, install over and over and over.

Chance sare the car will die before you need a new one if taken care of properly.
