Blower motor out, how to replace?
Hi, I am new to the forum and Scion XB's. I have a 2005 Scion XB (no longer under warranty) and the blower motor has gone out and needs to be replaced, I cannot figure out how to get it out and dealer tells me they have to take the dash apart to get it out and it will be about a $450 repair due to the extensive labor needed to replace. Is this correct or is there an easier way to get the blower motor out to replace it? Sounds crazy to me that the dash would have to be removed to get to it? I tried to find this on the forum but could not find this issue brought up before. I need to know if there is an easier way to replace that blower motor? Thanks for anyones help!
Does the dash have to come out to replace the blower motor? I do not have a repair manual and cannot find anything on line anyplace about getting the blower motor out of a 2005 XB.
Take the A-pillar covers off, pop the speaker grills take out speakers. remove the ac console, take out the gauge cluster and then you have six screws and the bolt that holds the airgbag in. after pulling everything the dash will lift up.
OK, I am gonna give it a shot this weekend and see what I find out. Hope once I take that dash apart I can see how to get that blower motor out from the top since it looks like it cannot come out from the bottom. This is rotten engineering, should not be this difficult to change out something as simple as a blower motor! Thanks for the replys!
They must not go out very often since they did not make it very easy to get them out! I still can't believe I have to take the dash apart to get it out, but that looks like the only solution anyone can come up up with and since no one else seems to have had this problem I am into new territory here!
Not uncommon as a former mechanic to seel people spend nearly a grand in labor to get a heater core, evaporator or blower serviced, or go without it. 9 times out of 10 a broken ac is from a leak in teh evaporator or no freon.
Basically its upside down with the cage below the cabin filter. Just got to remove the white box behind the glove box. I havent looked closely, but maybe you can just access the rear hub of the motor and replace the brushes without full replacement?

Well with the help of a certified Toyota mechanic we got the new blower motor in there last night! He had not done one before, but looked it up on the toyota service site where he found the step by step instructions and as we were afraid to get that blower out the entire dash and console had to be taken out of the car and the blower removed from above. It took us until late last night but I now have a working blower! Only oddity is that once it was all back together and tested we found that even though the switch has 4 speed settings, I found when we turned it on that I had the low setting, the second setting, and then in the third setting it goes back to low and then in high it goes to high. I am not about to tear into it again, but I am kind of mystified about why it is working this way. but at least I have heat again! Now you know if the blower goes out be ready for a major bill at the dealership or a lot of work to get it apart. A lot of guys says getting that dash out was easy, and maybe it is after you do a few, but for a first timer it was a slow job, lots of little plastic things in there that can break easily!
