Default Car security: Anyone install a "Fuel cut-off switch&quo

I had one on my Hybrid Civic. Installed a switch in line with the fuel power line. When the switch is "off" car will not start, just turn over. Looking to do this to my xB since I do not plan to get an alarm. No alarm because the only mods I am doing are: window tint and possibly HID.

Anyone own the Helms for the xB?

You can damage your engine by installing a fuel cut off, just do a starter by pass, same amount of time less potential damage. Bill

i don't think it will damage your engine if you have a fuel cut off switch, unless you forget to turn it back on then you have to replace the starter

Doing it a couple times won't damage your engine, but continued cranking with no fuel can score the cylinder walls and with out the fuel air mixture in the cylinder to compress, the piston can over travel, it doesn't take much we are talking .001 and we have valve meeting piston on some engines. Been doing alarms for a while and most shop will do a starter bypass, and not a fuel bypass.

You wouldn't crank the car with the switch off. Just the thief. I forgot about the switch one time in my civic...... I only used it under certain circumstances. This was over a years use of the switch.

With the starter switch you'd have to go into the engine and run a wire through the firewall. I'd prefer the fuel line. It's the #1 security feature on www.honda-tech.com
I've never seen any problems with it.

We'll have to find out which wire to use with a Helms manual. You basically put the splice in-line with the wire you cut. Are the fuel pumps for the xB located under the back seat?

The starter wire is located in the steering column and it just takes a relay and trigger, aka switch. no need to go to the engine. I do remote starts from under the dash. Bill

You could also use a switch to interupt the neutral saftey switch.

Hi, I want to know, is it safe to cut the starter wire and run the ends to a switch? Or do I need to splice the wires? If I need to splice the wires, how will this be done?

Thanks!

Ok well first off. No reputable shop will do a fuel cut on an alarm. There's far too much liability involved. If that relay or connection goes bad it can cause loss of control on the vehicle. A good alarm shop will put a relay in the wire that goes to starter. Not the fuel, and not the power to the ignition coils. I've worked in car audio shops for years, and I've seen quite a few shops get into heavy legal trouble over the years for doing stuff like that.

I wouldn't reccomend it, it's just not worth the possibility. If someone is going to steal your car, all you have to do is stop them from starting the motor, you get no gain from cutting the fuel or the ignition, all you get is the possibility of our car dieing while you're driving. If you cut the starter the only time it can affect you is when you are stopped and trying to start the car. If that fails, it doesn't have the possibility of killing anyone or causing an accident.

How many times have you seen an alarm fail? How many times have you heard that car down the street with the alarm going off for no reason? Why take the chance that your alarm will fail when you're doing 40mph in a corner and theres a school bus full of nuns infront of you?

If a thief can get around your starter not cranking the motor over, he can get around your fuel cut or your ignition cut, so there is no benefit there. It's not about motor damage or causing problems with your fuel system, it's about safety and security. The wire is right there in your dash, you don't have to go searching for it.

Well most people will just use crimp connectors, and some shady alarm shops will use quick connects that actually can cut through your wires. I say do it right, solder and heat shrink the wires. It only takes a few seconds longer and it won't fail over time. What you're going to do is cut the wire in a place where you're not going to have problems getting to it. Extend your wires to a length where you can hide the switch well, cut your wires with a little slack so you can solder them to the switch and mount it without any problems. You may want to solder connectors on the ends of the wires and use them to plug into the switch, that way if the switch fails you can replace it easier in the future.

Also see my post above about using the starter wire, not the ignition or fuel wire.
