Here are all four decks:
  • "Old" (pre-'06) base HU. This is the single disc unit that came in all Scions unless you specified the upgrade. Not being installed anymore on new, '06 Scions.

  • "Old" (pre-'06) upgraded HU. This is the 6-disc, color-changing unit that you paid extra for if you wanted it. Not being installed anymore on new, '06 Scions.

  • "New" ('06) base HU. Aux-input only (no controls for iPod). This is the single-discunit that comes installed in all Scions unless you specify the upgrade. The "single ****" HU, if you will. Being installed in all new, '06 Scions unless you specify the upgrade.

  • "New" ('06) upgrade head unit. Controls for iPod. This is the unit you pay extra for if you want it. The "three kob" HU, if you will. being installed in new, '06 Scions if you specify it.

Hope that clears it up. It doesn't matter if it is xA, xB, or tC - these are the HUs.

I dunno the NIB pricing for the new base HU. They are cropping up "lightly used" on eBay for <$150.

The NIB pricing for the new upgrade HU is about $450 retail. I have seen them discounted for around $400.

Of course, compared to the systems for the Japanese Ist, all the head units suck...

Why don't you buy from someone else?

I posted an eBay link above for a dealer that is offering the upgrade for $450 "buy it now";

my dealer is less than $50 more, and i don't have to worry about or pay shipping
it's not worth the risk...the dealer does a better job when you buy it from their dealership too

btw...i don't think you posted the link to ebay

For what it's worth, the 06 "three ****" deck doesn't have three ***** at all...
The volume (in the middle on the standard deck) is moved to the left side. The "multi-function controller" is added to the right side, and the one in the middle is simple a button. All it does is change the SSP setting, and the car type (with the help of the volume ****).

Kelly,
does the drive+play unit also have an option for a direct connection (line out rca or mini plug)? Or must you go by way wireless/hard wired FM modulation?

Seems like a nifty little device (the interface looks really cool)--I would connect it to my AVN 5435, but if it only offers FM modulation then I wouldn't consider it.

he said something, but it is a bit hard to explain on writing

it is the wire that connects the stereo to the iPod adapter above the glove box...

that iPod thing you attach above the glove box needs to be attached to some wire, and that isn't there

Can someone here explain what all can be controlled on the Ipod from the Scion Ipod head unit and steering wheel? I'm trying to determine if it is worth the extra $260.

2006XA....your 2006 unit has two *****. The right **** is a "toggle switch" you can turn it and also push it left and right, up and down. It allows you to control the ipod just as if you were using the wheel and the button on the iPod. I don't know what wheel controls are on the tC though, but that's how I use it on my xB. It is a lot easier than trying to control the iPod from the iPod itself, particularly while you are driving. Plus, the head unit displays the track name and album name, etc. etc. I considered the $260 well spent for the control it gave me and the sound is fantastic! The sound is much better this way than running it through an AUX port with RCA plug. Been there, done that. This is much better. Good luck to you.

Can you select what playlist you want to play? Can your browse by artist, album, or genre? Does it work with the Ipod's new podcast functionality?
