Default iPod upgraded HU gets Comm Error, other iPods work fine

I have a Mac formatted 3rd Gen 10Gb iPod with software ver 2.3.

Since I picked up my 2006 xB(2 days ago) the HU has given me a Comm Error when I connect my iPod using the provided cable. The HU recognizes the iPod and will charge it, but it doesn't allow file access or even bring up the menu. I've tried resetting the iPod according to the HU's manual, but this doesn't fix it.

I took it to the dealership last night and they checked the wiring and said it was probably the HU, so they are ordering a new one. They couldn't test it with another iPod since they don't have one and none of the techs have one.

Today on lunch, I borrowed a friend's Mac formatted 3rd Gen iPod and his works perfectly. Both of our iPods have been recently replaced by Apple and have the same firmware version, so there is something going on with my iPod. He recommended I do a RESTORE and re-sync the files from my computer and try it after that. I plan on doing this when I get home from work tonight.

Has anyone else had this problem? Does restoring the iPod fix the problem?

Thanks.

restoring the ipod will wipe all your files and restore all your settings to what they were when it came from the factory...beware.

What model is your iPod, what size is the hard drive, and to what OS is it formatted?

hard to help with that info as I can't tell you how to run a diagnostic without knowing it.

I posted all that information(see first post).

I've restored it before, so I know what happens. It's not a big deal since l have all the music on my Mac at home and can easily put everything back on in a short time. I'm just curious if anyone has had this problem.

I don't know how to access that model's secret diagnostic mode. The clickwheel ipods have a mode that allows you to diagnose hard drive and disk errors.

I bet the people at iPod Lounge would know. Go to www.ilounge.com and throw up a post in their "in car solutions" forum. Lots of knowledgable people over there who may be able to help, since it's clearly an issue with your iPod.

The stereo can't read the files, but the iPod does go into "do not disconnect" with the Scion logo?

You can try resynching the files from your computer. That may or may not help. Otherwise there may be a problem with your data pins in your dock connection, since the power is ok. Try blowing it out with some compressed air to get rid of any dust or anything that may be getting in the way of a connection. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the case actually.

Your computer recognizes the iPod ok?

Try reloading the firmware update as well. They don't usually have new ones for older models but refreshing the firmware may help.

Thanks, I've used ilounge before(when it was ipodlounge.com), I'll check it out.

The display on my iPod doesn't change(my buddy's ipod did). It simply shows the charging icon and the HU displays a Comm Error msg.

My Mac at home and my PC at work both recognize the iPod and I can sync up fine.

I'll probably have to restore it and re-copy all my music. Not a big deal. If that doesn't work, it's still under the 90 day refurb warranty with apple.

Thanks for the help.

I'd get the latest firmware. My 3g ipod didn't work with my alpine HU until I updated it.

So the HU isn't actually accessing the hard drive. Sounds like you have a hard drive read problem. You're getting power (fine, since you're basically plugging it into a wall charger) but the software is not capable of accessing the disk. Def. ask the guys at ilounge, someone's probably had the same issue.

FWIW, the ipod connections have always been patchy with 3rd gen units. There's just something about the dock connector/firmware that doesn't sit well with the adapters that was fixed on the 4th gen. You have to be really careful to keep the firmware updated or all of a sudden nothing works with it.

Its b/c its a 3G pod.

I bought a new 4g/60gb photo and my 3g/20gb went into the box. Mostly OK, but sometimes it would not respond to the HU and needed to be disconnected/reconnected. A lot of times, it would scroll, but when a song was selected, it would never start playing. A lot of times it would not be "connected" when restarting the car.

Well, just *had* to get the new 5g/60gb video iPod when they came out. So the 20gb went to eBay and the 60gb photo went into the box. Zero problems, faster search and play. No comm/connection errors now.

Probably something to do with the firmware from 3G to 4/5G. Or your dock connector is worn. I have heard of problems there also. Also, not sure if it needs to be PC formatted.

Anyway, FWIW. Good luck!
