Possible sound deadening solution?
yeah itd be useful except its so f'ing biased. listen, ill make this simple....i have 2 layers of eDead V1SE^2 on each door....i no longer have road noise....you know how much that cost me? hmm...all of $22.40. now you tell me...are any of those other products really worth it? the guy who does that thing has some weird bias against eD. I dono why but its strange. eD has the price to performance ratio hands down....i mean...how much did a sq ft of V1SE^2 cost me? like 80 cents a foot? That's ridiculous!!
Did eD change their product? That sound deadener showdown lists the eD products as being asphalt based, but the website lists them as butyl based. I thought I had read somewhere that they changed their product. If so, that would make that test outdated. I had read that awhile ago, but it might be off base now.
one word. Dynamat. made for cars. Why would I put roofing insulation on a car? cuz it's cheaper? I did fibergalss insulation in a speaker box, but yeah, that crap gets in your lungs. so, what's it worth? Getting tired of the cheapness in Scions' world
If it's basically the same stuff, why pay more?
I've never used insulation in a speaker box. It's only in the rear hatch. There are no vents and the cover seals it up well enough that I don't think there's any risk of inhaling fibers. Hardly more than living in my home anyway.

Yup I would say pink stuff sealed in the tailgate is very unlikely to infiltrate anywhere. Just hope it stays dry and doesn't become a rust sinknot many moisture entry points in there either.

you're just in luck...today's the last days of eD's forum sales. click here and get however much you need. these prices won't be back again ever after today.

I used 1 layer of RAAMmat BXT covering the inside of the outer panels in all 4 doors and the tailgate, covering the inside of the 1/4 panels (where I could reach) and the rear wheel houses, and also covering the entire floor from the rear bumper all the way up to the the front to the verticle part of the firewall. I used just a little over 1 roll of their material. 1 roll is 15" X 50' and is 62.5 square feet. I figure I used about 70 square feet or so total. http://www.raamaudio.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?p=pr

I must say that quite a few people have an axe to grind with eD as some of their past business practices have been shady. Their forum also seems to be unnaturally biased on how great eD is. You can find some angry people on just about any car audio forum other than their own.......
all i know is that i just ordered a sub from them 4 days ago, accidentally got the wrong one, and they're takin it back and exchanging it for another one even though the forum discount is officially up.....that's not too shady for me...that's just pure customer service. ive had nothing but the best experience with them. ive ordered about 800 dollars worth of stuff through 4 or 5 different orders and ive yet to have one bad experience, nor have i heard of anyone else having a bad experience. ever. they're on par with crutchfield for customer service as far as i'm concerned.
I like ED. I'm still using their subs but I do have a less than perfect story about the Nine.1 amp I bought.
I bought a package deal quite a while ago that included a Nine.1 amp and two 13OV.2 subs. I was very impressed with the sound quality and SPL from the setup. In less than a week the amp quit working. I couldn't find a receipt anywhere. They took my credit card bill that had no details as proof of purchase. I sent it back and a couple weeks later it came back. It played fine but one the speaker terminal screws did not match the others, there were small scratches on the amp, and the internal cooling fan was very audible. I don't know who repairs their equipment but they didn't live up to ED's reputation. I have since switched to a Hifonics which I like but it sings to me without any music playing so I'll probably get another ED when I can afford it.

The attached link has some comments on the latest edead V2 from the guy (Rudy or Don) who wrote and performed the sound deadener showdown. He knows his stuff. You can see he is not all that crazy about the eDead V2, however it is an improvement from what it was.
The type of business practice he notes is the sort of stuff the eD is infamous for. What happened was when Don performed the test on the different mats, edead specs claimed significantly higher weight than he measured. They also claimed the material as butyl when it (V1) was asphalt. He called them on it and they refused to modify their specs with the correct the data. When the V2 came out, the mat was now part butyl (like Raammat) so the butyl could be claimed. The mass was deleted so you could not check or compare the weight. The aluminum was now mylar (which is not as good as it was so they do not describe fully). This "non-information" or the past misinformation is the sort of practice that many people don't like and also why there are quite a few folks in the car audio forums that would never buy their products no matter the quality or price.

Thanks for the info jomo. I spent about ten years in the car audio business, but have been away from it for a few, and a lot of things have changed. I hadn't even heard of ED before I got to this site, and have since found the ICIX site, which seems to be based primarily on their stuff. I did order a sub and some eDead from them last week to give it a try. The price definitely came into play. I'll see how it works out. I had read that sound deadener showdown a couple years ago and was planning on going for the Damplifier, which seemed to be a winner from the showdown, but you don't hear much about it. I know Dynamat was never overly impressive to work with when I used it before. It did its job, but sure was a pain to install correctly.
BTW, thanks for the link, I'm always looking for good sites to see installs and get ideas for equipment.

i put dyna mat inside my hatch(allthe way to the top)and the taillight access holes.then i went to a fabric store and bought a foam seat cushion 2'x2' and i think it was 5" thick...so i cut it in half so it would be 2 1/2 inches.then i cut sections of it and stuffed in the hatch and taillight holes.....you dont hear any vibrations at all and it sounds solid as a rock when you knock on the outside panels and hatch.the wiper is annoying but you can remove it.as far as water in the hatch..i have checked several different times and haven't had any yet.hope i dont ever have it!

Like I said above this area is unlikely to get moisture in it, but you have hit on the best of both worlds. Upholstery foam is normaly closed cell so it wont soak up moisture (unlike Fiberglass insulation), AND, since you are cutting and stuffing pieces there will never be a perfect seal in the posts to catch water above it (unlike a spray foam).
