Underseat sub box should it fire up or down? Opinions wanted
I thought I'd ask for opinions on which way the woofers should fire for sound quality. I was told to down fire them to load the woofer. But the seat bottom is metal not foam so it won't absorb the sound like a normal seat would. It made me curious because it's easier to build a box to fire the woofer up. Also wouldn't you feel it more if it was pointed up?
If you've got an under seat box up firing how much does it make your cheeks quiver? I was wondering if I'd get a better massage with it that way, or if on a long drive would it make you start to itch?
Is there anyone in the industry or someone with a good working knowledge from experience that can give an explanation as to their choice?

Mine fires up. I wanted to make it downfire but the loss of space was too great. I have yet to finish my amp rack so I cant tell you how it sounds yet... Its not any harder to make it a downfire enclosure...
I agree with brianxb- you're going to lose too much airspace if the sub fires down. It's tough to find subs(10") that will fit the shallow depth and lack of airspace as it is I think there are some that do pretty well in small spaces, just require a whole lot of power and can cost quite a bit.
I've been trying and trying to figure out how to get enough space for my subs. I'm giving up and going to fire them up. I'm hoping the fact that the box'll be ported will help get the sound out? I've never built a proper ported box before, so I dunno.
having it fire either way doesn't leave much space for the sound waves to form, if at all.
bass is non-directional, so it doesn't really matter where it's coming from or where the speaker is facing.
what matters is that the speaker has room to "breathe"
hope this helps

I know in some cases, ported subs require more space than sealed. You may want to check the subs manufacturer's specs to see their reccomendations. It also depends on what you'll be listening to. Maybe check www.sounddomain.com to see what subs people use for small spaces. Worst case scenario= use an 8" under each seat. You'll probably have plenty of airspace to fire it down...

My personal preference would be to fire the sub downward, although like stated earlier you probably wouldn't have enough airspace
