Default Working with a "broken" sub...

I recently sold my tC for an xB. I miss the bigger engine but the xB is much easier on tall people and my car insurance. Anyway, in my tC I had an Alpine Type-S sub which I blew (I didn't match up the power ratings). I bought a Type-R used on eBay as I was preparing to sell my tC. My plan was to drop the new sub in my tC and sell the car with my audio system. But, I ended up selling the car to a friend of mine who was going to buy all new audio stuff so I took everything out. Because I was going to put the new sub in the tC, I didn't open the box right away. It sat in my room for about a week and a half, then I went to London for two and a half weeks. I got back to the States, did a bunch of other stuff, and didn't even look at the sub until a total of 5 weeks after receiving it. It looks used but not bad. A few days later I looked closely at it and the rim of the sub is cracked...

I contacted the seller about it and he never responded, and since it had been over a month, I didn't press it too far since I should have resolved it sooner. Oh well, live and learn.

I'd like to *try* using this sub in my xB. If it sucks, I think I'll get the underseat sub from eD. Can I use this sub? How do I make sure I have a completely sealed box? I've only installed my own system a few times and 1 for another friend and I never used any kind of sealing material around the rim of the sub, but I guess I probably should for this one, right?

I figured I could spend a few bucks and try this sub and if it sucks or breaks, it's better to try it and then throw it away than just throw it away up front. Can anyone offer any suggestions for me? Thanks!

seems usable, if you have a rubber joint where the sub meets the enclosure youll prob be fine

What kind of rubber joint? You'll have to excuse my ignorance, I rarely do stuff like this.

That's a pretty nasty bend. The biggest problem I see you having is that it's bent down so it will lift the majority of the rim up. Personally I'd scrap it and get something else. A bent rim can lead to some pretty nasty distortion. If you decide to use it, I think you'd come out best mounting it from underneath so the maximum amount of flat rim will be connected to the baffle. Then you only have to seal the broken area. If you mount from the top you'll have to seal almost all of the rim.

I hope you left negative feedback for the seller on Ebay. That's really bad mojo there.

you can get some weather stripping from the local hardware store, that should seal it up.
