04 AC TSB

04 AC TSB
If you have a 04 xB with weak AC, you may want to know about a TSB covering a poorly adjusted air mix cable.
The TSB is AC002-04. All it suggested is adjusting the air mix damper control cable to decrease the mix of warm air. Simple really, but it dropped my air temp by 8 degrees, which helped.
This may be old news for some of you, but thought it might help somebody.

There are two TSBs for xB air conditioning, both apply only to '04 and very early '05 models, and to be corrected under warranty MUST be taken to the dealer before the vehicle is 3 years or 36,000 miles old.
From my TSB list page:
AC007-04 A/C COOLING PERFORMANCE (REVISED)
2/16/2006 - 2004 – 2005 model year Scion xB vehicles.
In high ambient temperature areas, some 2004 – 2005 model year Scion xB owners may feel that the A/C system does not blow cold enough air. This procedure provides a method to improve this condition.
NOTE: Refer to TSB No. AC002–04, “A/C Not Cold Enough,” for instructions to adjust the air mix cable.
AC006-04 A/C COOLING PERFORMANCE (REVISED)
12/2/2005 - 2004, 2005 Scion xA. In high ambient temperature areas, some 2004 – 2005 model year Scion xA owners may feel that the A/C system does not blow cold enough air. This procedure provides a method to improve this condition
AC002-04 A/C NOT COLD ENOUGH (REVISED)
10/18/2005 - 2004 model year Scion xA and Scion xB vehicles. Some Scion xA and xB owners may feel that the A/C system does not blow cold enough air. This procedure provides a method to improve this condition.

So this only applies to the 04-05s hunh? Does this mean that they fixed it for the 06s or have not enough 06 owners complained for another TSB to be issued. I drive an 06.5 and the A/C seems pretty weak to me too. Am I out of luck?

It means that any unit built after they changed the spec to fix the problem had the new parts and adjustments done on the production line. (That means any unit made after the early '05s that had the earlier spec parts.)
From mid '05 on, this TSB doesn't apply because it has already had the change.
That's why most TSBs only apply up to a certain VIN when the change was incorporated into all production line cars.
My A/C won't turn my '05 box into a meat locker like the one in my old Chrysler would, but the A/C compressor in the Chrysler was about the size of the engine in my box, not the size of a soup can, and it pulled about 15 HP at MAX cool...

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin - A notice put out by a manufacturer detailing the recommended handling of a problem presented by a customer. These are often a result of a problem first noticed by customers in the field, and not covered in the already published technical documentation. Sometimes the reported problems result in a change in parts or production-line operations as well as repairing already delivered product if the customer complains of the problem.

IS there a way to find out of my 05 falls into this category? I wasnt sure there was one since I've read that most xBs just have a poor A/C system. Mine is extremely weak when it comes to the hot weather but I definitely want to check.
If it does, how do I approach the issue when I take into the dealership, do I tell them there's a TSB on the issue? Say I do need to take it in, can I still get covered even if my 3 year warranty is up? I had it extended before my 36K was reached. Or am I out of luck? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Only covered for 36,000/3 years.
There are TWO DIFFERENT TSBs on the '04-early '05 xB air conditioning.
If you look in my .sig you will see a link to the TSBs on my server. Those TSBs fully describe the work and also show exactly which VINs they apply to.
Tom
On involves a simple adjustment of the control cables behind the dash, the other involves parts and labor running over $1200...
