Default '05 xB Turn Signal blinking real fast

Hi,

My right turn signal on my 2005 xB is suddenly blinking REALLY fast...the left one is normal.

I did an exterior sweep and all the (right-side) normal turn signal lights seem to be blinking, altho real fast..

Not Sure where to go next....turn signal relay failing ??

or it's the bulb. lol.

the bulb is cheaper and about 75% chance of what is wrong

if it was the relacy both sides would blink fast

^^^ Sounds right to me.
sammydad1, You sure both the bulbs are actually lighting up?
Maybe try and have it looked at by the dealer if it's still under warranty.

Did you change to LEDs lately? If so, that may also be a problem.

No problemo This is a very strange problem that kinda doesn't make sense.
I vote for a squirrel munching on the wiring harness at this point!

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions....

I agree that squirrel munching might be as likely an option as anything....I have never seen anything like this before..EVER....

Usually the blinker just lights and doesn't flash when a bulb has blown....not do this blinkity blinkity thing...

That is incorrect. Most (but not all) the flashers I've ever dealt with will flash at a faster rate when a single bulb is out. In the old days with thermal flashers this was caused by a lower load generating less heat in the flasher element. Now in the electronic flashers (like the one in xB) there is a current sensor. If that sensor does not see the expected load it puts the flasher in a fast blink mode.

What is tghe history of your problem? Did everything work fine and then suddenly (without you making any changes) it started blinking fast?

Or did you recently replace a bulb? If you installed a wrong (lower wattage) bulb, it will blink fast as the load is lower than expected. I've seen bulbs mislabeled from the factory or sometimes change wattage themselves (but usually they become higher not lower wattage as the filament shorts out).

So, I would say to swap the front and rear bulbs from right to left and see if the problem moves to the other side. If the problem moves, then one of the bulbs is the problem. If the problem stays the same then the flasher is probably defective.

...elementary, dear Watson....

I hope the muffler bearing wasn't affected.

Hi,

Old thread but I finally got this fixed and thought I would post.....This had been a nagging thing for a couple years....

Turns out that the front right (passenger) turn signal bulb had developed a bad ground contact inside the bulb socket. I found this solution on another forum for some other car after googling it. The problem is that with these bulbs, there is not ground to chassis or the socket because the housing is all plastic.

I had to pull the bulb and unbend the metal contacts and while I was at it, I polished up the contact points on the bulb itself.

I was lucky that in that I just guessed which bulb to check out first. It could have been one of the other bulbs on the right side just as easily.

Thanks for reporting back!!

I have 'fast blink', too, and all turn signal lights are working. So, probably my problem is the same as yours, although it would have driven me crazy to figure it out.
