i was thinking the same way when i first got my jetta...........but
after i start driving my IS300 and M3 at night...........WOW....i just can't go back
its like" i had been with 56k for long time but once i install cable modem.....it was impossible to go back to 56k........never"
 kinda the same concepts with the halogen(spellings) and HIDs....
i do...my bulbs r 5K bulbs...umm i mounted the ballast on a flat spot in the engine bay by the headlight and tucked the wires in the fender, and the brand i had were gourmet garage hid's which r no longer in production. i can get a couple other brands at this moment. ill pm u back when i find out.

i did a few search.........but end up just pics of Hids at night shots. i want some under the hood setup........such as mounting etc......... :D
All you have to do for mounting is to just secure the two ballasts on the R/L sides of the car...should be right over the R/L wheel well.
And for those who claim that 300+ for "lights" is rediculous--you probably have never driven a car equipped with HIDs. Also--can you really put a price on improved road vision at night? Makes you think about all those useless mods that add up to more than a few hundred bucks, don't it.

I put them on my Corrado and after driving with HID's for like 2 years, I can't go back to regular lights. After rock guarding the front, it'll be the first purchase I make on mine.

These typically cost more, but do feature a mechanism that directs the light upwards when you hit the hibeams.
