can't decide auto or stick
I am looking to buy a Xb here pretty soon. I can't seem to decide between auto or stick.
I am leaning to the auto side. Can someone with a auto Xb tell me how the car drives?
I mean it only has 106hp, is it really powerless?
I am not looking to race or anything, just want a peppy car
Thanks

I was in the same predicament last week when I was placing my order. I've only ever driven 5-speeds, so I was more than biased when I was getting ready to purchase the car.
But, after driving the automatic demo my dealership had, I seriously rethought that idea. It wasn't anything like I expected. The car seemed fast enough, at least for my needs. Then I started thinking about the convenience of an automatic, and ability to easily find a buyer when I sell it years down the road, etc.
So, I bought the auto

i have an auto.
My previous car was an auto VW passat, then a stick GTI, a stick Golf, and an auto Acura integra.
For this car, i knew it was going to be a daily driver, mostly in the city, and my left hand occupied with a cell phone or something.
I also realized that it is not a performance car, and i wouldnt be able to drive it like i did my GTI. I am also a lazy bum and a sucker for convenience, which is why i chose the automatic.
I am disappointed that i cant get my weak ___ car over 92mph, but i have a motorcycle to go fast on!

I have an xB in auto, and its great. And I'm not one to "cruise". But you should give one a test drive to see what you like. I live on hills and drive for long periods of time, often in traffic (21,000 miles and counting)...
Like a number of the responders here, I used to ONLY use a stickshift. But a number of factors (arthritis, type of commute, etc.) caused me to go with the automatic. Other advantages: significantly higher value on resale/trade-in and I have found the "grade logic control" (keeps the Scion in a lower gear until the grade levels out) extremely helpful on hills.
ive driven both extensively and i prefer the manual. driving an automatic makes me go from a mediocre driver (at least im honest) to a lousy one.plus the 5spd is MUCH more fun.
ive been a VERY commited manual transmission driver ever since i learned how. When shopping the xb i was considering automatic but the wife made abundantly clear that she manted manual. This is after spending much time convincing/teaching her the 5spd on my maxima. and now regardless of what 2nd car we buy(yeah one car sharing sucks) she wants the xb! So i am perplexed, but i no doubt will end up with another manual.

depends on which you prefer. Drive 'em both, and see for yourself.
I opted for the stick, but that's because I don't like driving automatics. Ever time I jump in my girl's auto civic the first thing I always do is instictively look for a clutch, and it's annoying when it's not there. I hate automatics!
The auto isn't really underpowered though (we're talking about a 1.5 here, so when I say underpowered I mean relatively
), and if you like autos you'll probably think it's pretty smooth.

It's all about the 5-speed.
Working at Longo....I got to drive around alot of of both and I still feel that the auto doesn't have the pickup of the 5-speed. I mean I was cruising after the Longo Yellow Bus (5-speed) with our Silver auto xB and wasn't as responsive as it should have been. The bus could pull if it wanted to and that's with the +100lb system that it's carrying around versus the Stock silver xB
Also consider the issue of eventually putting forced induction.....torque converters that aren't designed for the power aren't as efficient while you can eventually switch for a different clutch in a 5speed.

If you get an auto don't be dissapointed. I was, until i got the Injen intake OMG! I damaged the front two whels and put the stock ones back on and from a stop with trac off i can burn out, and get 2nd gear scratch. Autos are fun when you get more power!

Well when i burned out it wasn't major but for like 2 secs. And when my dad went to work one day as he left i decided to watch the car go and once it hit second gear the tires chirped big time. Well either way your getting a scion so thats all that counts, personally i wish we got a manual.
