Not happy with xB....probably going to trade in.
Perwsonally I make people get out of my way. I mean if there not gona get out of my way i'll cut in front of them or make them merge over into the next lane. I don't care i'm just stuborn adn think of my car as a big suv. I own the road ad nif you have a problem wiht it then toooo freakin bad lol!!! ANyway thas my 2 cents for the afternoon oh i mean morning. night shift has me all screwed up.

with 19's.... i guess its how you drive ..lol
I'm just wondering if you are just not used to aggressive driving in heavy fast flowing traffic - I'm in Jacksonville and I drive the box 25 miles to work everyday. I cruise between 80 & 90, I never have any problems merging into traffic and I have an automatic. My auto is great, if you have an auto and want more power take the O/D off when going onto the on ramp that will give you a boost then you can put the O/D back on when you are on the high-way.
i would have to agree with most people here in saying that there is plenty of power to merge on the freeway, pass, go up hill without losing speed and so on. i have had no problems with any of these situations. i do have "some" mods and stock wheels, but there isn't a huge difference in the power from the mods. you just need to adjust your driving to accomodate the power situation in the xB.
If you dont like it- its simple- trade it in on a pt cruiser, and shut the hell up!- then dont come back on here for sympathy when you realize how big a POS it is!- also, dont expect members on here to agree with you!
Couple of thoughts on this:
1. He bought this when living in DC and was happy
2. Having lived in DFW and commuted 62 miles per day for 10 years I think I can explain his concern. In rush hour traffic in DFW the flow of traffic is bumper to bumper and 80 mph. If you try to merge into an open spot (open spot defined as 12" bigger than you car
) most drivers in DFW will speed up to prevent you getting in front of them. You could be driving a Ford GT and have trouble merging on those roads.
Needless to say road rage is rampant.
In contrast btw I have to say how amazing it is in WI when it comes to merging. People actually slow down or *gasp* change lanes to allow you to merge.
Pretty refreshing.

I think maybe some of y'all didn't train your VVT-i correctly...

I'm just saying when I see a car go by me that is obviously a better performance car then mines I think about my decision to purchase the box. Like at a light, they just "fly" by when the light turns green.
But I get over it! There are alot of xB's in my area(Notheren VA) so that helps out the decision to buy a little better. :D

Try driving a stick and shift above 3000 RPM, there is a little bit of power there... Just an opinion... :?
It's a lightweight car and can easily out manuver bigger vehicles.
The computer controlled transmission seems very "smart"
and adapts the shift points depending on how hard I push it.
Drive aggressively and it will crank the RPM's
up to 5200 before shifting.
The only modification I have is a TRD free-flow air filter
that I bought with my $50 Scion gift card.
I noticed an immediate improvement after putting it in.
I have also switched to a 1/2 synthetic oil and now
the engine starts and runs very smoothly at 8500 miles.
Another thing to consider is how many miles are on your car.
I noticed that the gas millage and performance didn't improve
significantly until the engine was beyond 3000 miles.
I guess it had to wear in?
If you need more performance, switch to synthetic oil and
try a free-flow air filter or a cold air induction system before you throw in the towel.
At 700 miles, Fugli averages about 31 mpg with mostly urban (NYC) driving and a litle highway on rte 280 to livingston. I have no complaints except that the xB wants to roll at 60 mph while I prefer 50!!
No trouble accellerating, stopping or cornering, and the width is great for squeaking through traffic!

5 speed, steel wheels, no mods or aero.

The Celica GTS motor is impressive. That swap is going to be awesome. I was impressed enough by it in lotus tune (10 more HP) that after driving an Elise around for 45 minutes I put my deposit down and stepped in line for the 16 month wait. The Elise is also a lot lighter (under 2000 lbs) but even with the few hundred extra lbs of the XB it will move it pretty good. Mileage should still be decent too.
I'm suprised people don't report higher mileage from thier XB's. My Mom's lincoln Mark 8 still gets 29 MPG with 140Kmiles on it's 4.6L dual overhead cam V-8- and it WILL get out of it's own way.

I've got an xB with the 5 speed, I bought it when I lived in Northern VA. I commuted on the Dulles Toll Road and beltway everyday and never had any trouble merging and switching lanes with the big, fast SUV a-holes. Just go for your holeshot and take it, You cant be timid because you're driving a smaller car. F-them. Drive defensively always, of course though.
BTW, I live in Phoenix now where the SUV's are bigger and more plentiful than 10 DC area's worth put together and the speed limit is 75 mph here--- guess what, I have no trouble keeping up and I cruise at 90-100 mph on Highway 17 all the way up to Sedona too.
I can understand where you are coming from. I would not have bought an xB if it didn't pass my basic standards. Edmunds clocked an 8.99 second 0-60 for the 5 speed manual xB and I managed a 9.2 hardly trying. That's sufficent for me and coincidentally it's on par with or better than most of your large SUV's out there. It's about the same as a H2, Chevy Tahoe etc, though not as fast as the 'performance' SUV's.
Point is, I think it's got adequate power if I can maintain 100 mph on the freeway on a slight incline in 5th gear. If you must have an automatic, then I would want something torquier than this engine at the other end, personally. But many people here are happy with even the automatics performance.
We all agree it could be better, but the bottom line is this car would not have cost $14,000 if it came with a 180 hp celica engine and a 6 speed and navagation and AWD and everything else people _____ about it not having.
