You and me both. Knock on wood. That's pretty good living in Chicago.

My original windshield lasted me about 120K miles. I repaired about 3 chips and after that I had 2 long cracks on the driver's side. Finally replaced it with a new one for about 160 bucks.

The Newer one seems to be stronger and more resistant to cracks/chips. The freeway I drive on has a high risk for rock chips, tons of gravel trucks more than I've seen anywhere else.

No matter which lane I try, I still have small rocks smack against my windshield. Funny thing is, the majority of the hits are from regular common cars rather than big diesel trucks.

So you say that if the crack started from the outer edge of the windshield it can be replaced under warranty? (Not necessarily I mean) because I have a crack that's like that and it popped up out of no where. I was a meet one night and it wasn't there before and then as I was going home I saw it.

At 38k mine looks like the lunar surface too.. I got 1 crack that appears stress related from the top center, and 4 big bulls eye chips, 1 which I had filled in, but was still too bad to completely fix.

Once it gets warm, I'm gonna get it replaced at safelite..

I've had good luck with Safelight on other vehicles and will try them when I need an xB glass.

my 04 has almost 100k and my windshield is trashed.

a couple cracks and alot of sand blasting.

the only saving grace for me is that my insurance has a windshield deductable that allows me to get it replaced for $10

I have owned two xB’s the first one an 05, I drove and never had a crack. I don’t need to drive on the freeway to get to work so that is probably why. When I traded it for my tC it had 25k miles on it.

My Wife’s 06 xB that we have owned for about two years has 45k miles on it and we just replaced the windshield last week. She had over 12 rock chips, she got the first one the second day she had the car. They were not in her direct field of vision so we didn’t worry about them. She had two cracks one was behind the rear view mirror and not that noticeable so I didn’t want to replace the glass. Then about two weeks ago she had a crack develop from the lower left corner to the rear view mirror and it actually met up with the other crack. The funny thing was she stopped to drop someone off they opened the door and the crack was created.

I got the new windshield for $190 installed. My insurance does not cover windshields kinda sucks unless I pay the $500 deductible

Last month I bought an '06 with ~4500 miles on it. When I picked it up from the seller, it had a ~8 inch crack in the windshield that started from the bottom edge. There were no craters or stars or anything that indicated it was from a rock hit.

By the time I drove it home (drove it from MS to NJ), that crack propagated to over 4 feet long.

I got it replaced at a cost of ~$280 out of my pocket. I have a $1k deductible on insurance.

I've read many other reports of 1st gen xB owners having stress cracks appear in their windshields. It appears to me to be a common issue.

A rock cracked mine 2 weeks ago. Sounded like a gunshot, but there were only two small spiderwebs. Safelite came out the next day and repaired it for free (courtesy of my insurance co) You can still see where the hit was, but it's 1,000 times better now.

Its probably been about a year since i have seen a stealership own up and replace a faulty windshield. Your xB may be too old to fall under that warrenty. Now if you had one replaced and it developed a stress crack a short time later ( like my SafeLite did back on 2/06 ) then it should be replaced at no cost to you.

Guys ... if you can get the PPG glass, and make sure that the installer replaces the gasket as well. If not you will be sure to have leaks as 2 different friends of mine had glass replaced and not the gasket only to leak in a couple of days. The OEM gasket only costs 30 or so clams.

dayum, glad to hear I'm not the only one that's gotta replace the stock windshield. I got 3 rock hits that vined out midway through the shield. Not enough to obscure my vision but seeing as I always keep my XB clean n shiny, I just can't stand it.

I was really worried about windshield before I bought because of all the threads. I choose to carry the do-it -yourself windshield repair kit....and have needed it twice. Both times it worked good enough....no cracks. 45,000 miles I wonder what percentage of xb owners have had to replace theirs? I bet its not as bad as we would think!!

I had to have mine done about 8 months ago but that was due to an asphault puck the construction company left laying around-I pursued them with photos of all the pucks they had left and the loaction photos and their insurance paid for the new one.

Since then I have gotten a new safelite and it's fine, lots of litte rock chips but the highway I drive is bad for that-but I had a VW cabrio 97-and it got hit a lot and never cracked or got anything as far as bigger than a bb sized ding-same highway...

I think the roads, driving styles (distances from other vehicles) and speeds make a big difference but I think some vehicles are more prone to problems. I haven't heard of xAs having as many problems.

I got a new windshield installed by warrenty (for leaking) shortly after i bought mine used. withing a couple months, had a crack start without a rock chip, then one from a rock chip, and another one off of that. have about 6 feet of crack in all together.

I'd be curious also. I'm at 37K with the original one with only slight pitting and no major carnage.
