Default BAD ECU??

My 08 xB has just over 15K on it.
The other day the car starts fine but it felt like the power steering died and the airbag light came on as well. Took the car to Toyota and they said it was a bad ECU. The 08 xB has electronic power steering. No issue with airbag. The part that sucks is they actually have to rip out the entire dash to get at it because its behind the steering wheel somewhere. Anyone else have a similar issue?

PS they were nice enough to give us a Silver xB2 as a loaner free of charge

Wow...I've never heard of that happening, but it's covered under warranty so that's good.
It's awesome that they gave you another xB2 for a loaner! Just check everything out before you sign on the dotted line and you should be fine. These are machines and things are gonna go bad...at least it happened while you were covered.

You 100% that was the airbag light and not the ps light?

I have replaced a Power steering ECM on an 08 XB, did you hit anything? curb, huge pothole?

The dash techinically has to come out, it is located behind the steering wheel under the dash (directly infront of you).

Working a little magic I was able to get it out without pulling the dash, so it is possible to get it out without pulling the dash.

i just had my powersteering go out, it did it yesterday at roughly 16,300 miles. i went into applebees to get something to eat and when i came out no power steering, and the light was on took it to a dealer and it said replace the ecu, however i am not in a place long enough so i just had them reset it, and it is working fine now. so will see what happens, this weekend i am in a location until wed so i took it to a dealer here but they cant do anything because obviously the code is no longer there.

Default 77K miles, Brake Power booster in Sept, Now P/S ECM....

OK, 2ND Gen XB has been great car up to this fall. Spent $900 in Sept getting Brake Booster replaced and now my wife gets stranded 70 miles away with Steering light on and steering wheel not turning. I tow car back to dealer and they call saying they want another $850 (plus $200 for towing) to replace the electric steering ECM. I saw P/S ECM's on Ebay for $44 to $129. Are these "plug and play" and how hard is this control module to get too? Also see the part #89650-12520, 2008 Power Steering Control Module from Dealer Direct Parts.com for $400. Is this the same part dealer wants to sell me? Starting to wonder if Scion is same quality standard as Toyota. Any ideas would be appreciated. Wife loves the car but do not have $2K for repairs every 90 days.

Called Toyota/Scion Dealer had them load VIN# and my vehicle is not covered
(early 2008, last 8 are 81024981). On to plan B. Just need to know if I have to
use Scion ECM or if aftermarket/E-bay is OK. Lots of difference in price..........

Thanks for the VIN break, my 2008 is in the clear ! If you get a code but otherwise everything seems OK, first thing to do is reset it by disconnecting the battery negative for two minutes. If it happens again, then it's time to take it seriously !

i have no idea how it broke it just started leaking from the coupling, past the solid line so i figure its time for it to be replaced.
