Having owned 43 cars in about as many years of driving.. most being performance cars.. I can say this from experience..

"If you want a fast car... buy a fast car"

Any car can be made to go fast.. if you put enough power in it..thats the easy part, but that doesn't make it a fast car or a reliable one. When you take a car like the xD that was designed for economy , you can't expect it to handle, brake and turn when you overpower the chassis. You end up with a car thats not "balanced".
I used to mod everything I bought.. always looking for more.. It was fun wrenching on the car and making it quicker.. but it was a never ending battle and lots of money and time when I could have bought something quick that was designed to be that way in the first place.
You can polish a turd all you want.. but it's still a turd..
I've been on both sides of this argument.. so I understand where both are coming from..

I can agree to that but can also agree you can make ur car to whatever you want.. reliable or fast or both. Its just if your willing to invest in doing that. Besides. Scions are made to be unique or something to stand out

I agree with Mike above, but really the most effective thing (highest cost/benifit) you can do to a Scion is:
1. suspension - lower center of gravity, carve like your on rails
2. MPG improvements (tires, oils, tune up things- spark plugs/air intake).

Everything else is a money eater

every car can be improved in some way. even the almighty GTR was cracked. if you can put different wheels on it, it can be made better. Hell, even Japan is making hybrids fast now...

Yes, lighter wheels will result in a slight increase in mpg, plus unsprung rotational weight is decreased, thus decreasing the amount of brakeing force / stop distance needed. Don't settle for some Rota junk at $120, or so... spend the extra $20-50 per wheel extra, and do it right.

Yes, but it will still cost a minimum of $8-10K to convert your car to a battery powered electric car. At that point, you almost are better off finding a used (2004 or newer) hybrid, or new hybrid to buy.

i just saw it and yea would be nice. I believe the xd has full potential of being even a 240hp monster with stock internals with great tuning. But its been 3-4 years since production and we just gotten headers.. the cr-z gots more parts available now and based with what I see. Not many. People own them as well but yet already hks got involved. And I'm pretty sure greddy will jump in soon too

CRZ is Japan's car of the year. there isn't anything you can't find for that car in Japan. Top Secret turbo'd theirs. A.M.S., Spoon, Noblesse, Mugen, C-West, and countless other companies make stuff for it. Even the Prius and Insight have bigger aftermarket than our xD/Urban Cruiser/Ist combined worldwide

I think Honda's/Acura's have been Japans long time aftermarket friend , heavy the last 15-20 years (versus Toyotas). I'd say the last 6 years or so (ever since the MR2 and Supra died) Toyota has dropped off considerably. Nissan , Misubishi, Honda ... they all do well aftermarket.

Yes, ohhhh I forgot Subaru also.
Not sure how Hundaui (sp?) is doing, in regards to the Genesis, etc.

I bought my xA due to "percieved" durability/reliability, gas mpg, and overall bang for the buck (relative to other NEW cars out there). If I was to go strickly high performance (HP torque, etc. etc) , I'd still want to lean towards a 2006-07 Impreza RS, or WRX most likely (5-6 speed manual) and have fun with that. Not too many other cars out there excite me in the last 5-10 years.

well, if you have been to Japan, Toyota's, Suzuki's, Daihatsu and Nissans rule the road there.

not speaking from experience but from what i hear (please correct me if i'm wrong) but over there they are taxed by engine size. so they they have a lot of kei cars, which is pretty much the first gen xb, but with a smaller engine. so they may appear van like, but they are not vans. once again, i haven't been there, but that's what i hear.

It may be plausible to reduce street racing (jst a theory) lol .. but I doubt it lol. Ii kno I'm way off but seems possible to if they did tax by size lol

yea, lot's of 1000 or less cc powered cars. many are turbo 3 cylinder making 90 hp. cars indicated by yellow plates. not common on the highways either. there's a reason for that...
