Question New air intake system?

I just got a 2010 xd and am thinking about installing a cold air intake system or a short ram to increase mpg a little and maybe even hp. Can anyone give some input as to which system would be more beneficial. I know that the short rams are cheaper and easier to install.

Also, can anyone suggest intake systems that are CARB certified. Darn PA for adopting that. I am all for reducing emissions, that's part of why I drive a zippy little car. Why would they make it illegal to install a product that increases mpg?

CAI will not improve MPG at all. And it might add 1-2whp. Is that worth it to you?

you will find out if he buys it or not.

you might get about 5hp with a cold air. injen or fujita are ideal but look at spectre filter cone swap. its cheap and u'll enjoy it for what it is.

Thank you both for the input. I have seen a few other posts on other threads about cai's and claims of slight mpg increases (i.e. ~2 mpg highway). I have also seen the claim of 5 hp increases. I know this is not too significant, but I think they look cool too. We will see. Still want to do a little more research.

xdkidd, thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely look into those.

I know with the short ram, you will get slightly better throttle response, while with the cai you don't feel the power until the 4k+ rpms

That is what I have been reading too. The short ram seems to make more sense to me if I will not be driving very aggressively most of the time.

I also wanted to mention that I could only find two short ram intakes for the xd. One by HPS and the other a Weapon R. Does anyone know anything about these brands. They don't seem to be as well known as others like injen, k&n, DC, etc.

I know they are trustworthy but I can't even consider that one since it isn't CARB legal.

oh yea. haha sorry. I work for an autoshop so the guys i take to smog over look that stuff for me as long as my emissions are fine. I seriously dont see why it would be illegal as long as you can still pass the emissions part of the test just fine. *shrugs* oh yea. I love in California so emissions is a real pain in the ___... >.>

Just go to auto parts store buy a schosche cone filter. Take out the stock air box and simply put the cone on the stock air hose.

You don't need CARB for PA. I have cai on my 2012 xb and just got it inspected at the dealer no prob.

Oh ok thanks. I just bought my xD when I moved to PA a few months ago. I thought that they adopted the CARB regulations for smog inspection.

How would that work? Wouldn't you still have to attach the mass air flow sensor somewhere?

No need to even move any of that. Just the stock air box.

this is what i did with my Injen Cold Air Intake. The company says this intake adds 8hp and 9ftlbs of torque. It's pretty easy to instal.

I have read through your thread before. Came out looking good. I would be so nervous to drill a huge hole in my bumper haha. Props for that.

i got the weapon R short ram with the duct ran to the bottom. the gas is more or less about the same. the throttle response is a huge improvement so is the low end torque. sounds pretty throaty too.
