Default iPod connectivity issues

Hey all. Don't know if anyone else has experienced this. Recently my iPod classic won't play music. I'm using the original iPod cord that came with the car (actually my second one, but is oem). It charges, no problem. Sometimes it'll play through the car's interface, but most of the time I get a "iPod COMM error". Sometimes it'll just say "iPod 0:00", and I get not music. Sometimes music will play, but I have to control it via the iPod itself, and nothing shows on the radio display. I have a spare cord, and have tried that one with the same results. I've tried rebooting the iPod, updating software, etc. Nothing helps. Sometimes I'm lucky and it will work, but if I stop and start up the car later, it won't work again. Any ideas?
