how often do people run in to problems with chipping?

 

Haven't had any problems with my wheels, had them painted for a year now

Followed by wheel clear although I think regular clear would work too.

 

I finished doing mine a couple of weeks ago. I think they turned out pretty good, but I did mine a bit differently than I've seen anyone else do them on here. I painted the entire rim, except for a thin strip (about 1/4") around the border. In order to do that, I had to do a lot of masking, then cut the masking tape around the border of the wheel with an Exacto blade.

WORD OF WARNING: if you've never heard before, you can actually lose some of the feeling in the tip of your finger if you spraypaint too long. This happened to me, and it's been almost two weeks, and I still have a numb spot on the tip of my index finger (the one I sprayed with). I recommend getting one of those spray can attachments that makes the can spray like a spray gun (i.e. a trigger) instead of having to push down on the top. The extra few bucks are worth the feeling in your dominant hand's pointer finger, if you ask me.

Also, if you take the wheel to get it balanced after you paint it, be sure they don't get any cleaning solvent on the paint. The shop I went to used a solvent to clean the wheel in the place where they were going to attach the stick-on wheel weight, and some dripped onto the face of the wheel. I had to re-sand and re-spray that portion of the wheel, which was a royal pain (took 3 more tries, actually).

I tried to mask off the Scion logo on the caps and spray them seperately, but the paint came up with the masking tape in several little places. It doesn't look too bad from a distance, but you can really tell up-close. (My patch job consisted of a few scribbles with a Sharpie. )

great write up. I'm going to do it. Does anyone know if it can be any automotive Duplicolor paint or does it have to be wheel paint?

 

I don't know if it *has* to be wheel paint, but why not use the stuff designed specifically for your wheel? If it's a matter of being able to find it at a store, just make a few calls. WalMart even sells some Duplicolor stuff. I found mine at both Napa and Checkers Auto Parts (aka Kragen, aka Schucks, all three of which were merged with O'Reilly Auto Parts).

You should have took more time masking it off...

 

cory you should def look into rolling your front fenders flat so you dont see the brackets for the fenderliner it looks 100x better that way who cares about goin to stock, where ever you trade it in wont even notice

 

Carbon: taken more time masking the wheel, or the cap? They were both masked off just fine, it's when I peeled the masking tape off, the paint stuck to the tape from the cap in a lot of places.

got a flint mica and i wanna paint them flat black, its got a couple curb rashes but nothing major,i wanna make this least expensive as possible, what can i jack my car up on to take the wheels off?

also can anybody make a small llist of all the materials i'll need?

 

can i throw my car on cinder blocks for the day while i do this? also i got very ight curbrash on 2 rims, will the sandpapper help flatten this out? also i don't want it glossy bot not flat black did you apply any clear coat?

 

has anyone had any problems with applying tire shine on their wheels after they paint them? does it affect the paint?
