Forums are Very Slow
#41
I think it depends on the time of day. I try to get on very early in the morning (eastern time) and it seems to move pretty fast. Just try to get on when the site traffic is slow if you can.

Today (right now) seems to me to be the worst it's been - in the last 40 minutes I've been able to pull up only nine ScionLife pages and make one post. I checked my performance to one of the speed-test links and am currently running at an average D/L speed of 6.4M/s, so it is unlikely it is my last mile.
I don't know if it is the servers being used by ScionLife, or the pipes into and out of them that are hosed, but something is very wrong to see this with only 402 users on...
I'll be back in a couple hours - this isn't viable.
Have fun folks!
Tom

The website is back to being horribly slow.
I canceled my premium membership automatic withdrawals. I think there is plenty enough money coming in to keep this website running smoothly. I don't know what my money is going to, seemingly not to fix this problem. I can only guess at all that though because it seems as though we're not entitled to an explanation of what is going wrong.
I don't think it's the time of day that is a problem. The last time we were slow for days in a row, I looked at the "who's online" list and there wasn't any more there than usual. And there are plenty of other busier message boards out there that I'm on that have never had slowness problems like this one, don't even have as much support with members paying money, and when they do, they apologize for it and quickly solve the problem.
I love this website. That's why I supported it with my hard earned money and that is why I bother to complain about its slowness. It's not a poo-poo, it's a "I freaking love it here, please fix it so that I can use the website".
Please. Pretty please, fix the problem. If it would help, I could get you all in touch with a plethora of message and website owners that could give advice on how to keep this place running smoothly.

i think i'm going to help clear out some really old threads to help.
i've been seeing a tread of users (esp. certain ones who will be unnamed) posting so many unecessary threads that it's frankly just annoying and wasting valuable space.
use the damn search people... SERIOUSLY.
that's really the only explanation i can think of.

Well I'm glad to say it's not the fault of the TJ thread or users. *shrug* Whether or not the old, useless posts are the cause of this, I still think we need to get the board shut down for a day and get all the really old, useless messages cleared out. Get rid of old stickies that don't need to be stickied anymore.. just because it's a mess to look at.
But I hope the problem gets fixed soon.. it's hard to enjoy being here when you can't get anywhere at all.

Knowing someone that runs a forum larger than this one, they say that search is one of the biggest slow downs to servers.
That forum allows TONS of picture posting, but costs $249 a year. It takes that kind of money to rent the servers to make the forum move.
Yes it has been frustrating how slow things have been moving.

I would guess that this problem goes a lot further than old or large posts.
Does anyone have Darren's phone number?

Something bad has been happening today, not sure what. I am working on getting the site onto new servers with the new software. I am HOPING that this will happen in the next month.
Hosting costs are already four figures a month and going to double with our new setup. It just takes some time to get everything ready to go.
Don't give up on us, we hope to have things back together soon!

The server techs found a problem at the server - apparently it was getting stuck in a loop of some sort - total actual traffic was about one third of normal all day because of the extreme time it took to get a valid response. Techs worked something out around the problem, we should be back to running up to capacity again.
My most recent responses have been:
9.462
12.735
9.265
7.546
13.423
8.527
13.510
for page loads.
Lets see if it holds up...
