essentially, the issue is that the search becomes difficult once several 'satellite' threads exist around a single, definitive thread. Ideally, these satellite threads would eventually become locked.

if there were a way to omit locked threads from the search, or omit them by default, the search may start to return more relevant results. Hopefully, that would just require a small change to the query...

 

That is an excellent idea. I will make a note to look into that on Monday.

 

Counter point:

When a topic is locked, the mod who locks it generally points the thread to the most relevant topic. There still may exist several unlocked topics which have no useful information on that subject. When I am looking for something obscure and see a locked topic, I realize it probably has a link to a useful topic and check it out.

Perhaps a check box to indicate that you would like to omit locked topics from your search?

 

... or even a drop-select that provides three options:
all threads
unlocked only
locked only

Hey guys, the script for searching is horribly complicated and I didn't write it. I 'might' be able to hack in a modification to exclude locked topics, but that is about it.

I have reconsidered this idea. It seems like a good idea, but you are right -- most locked topics have a link that take you to the best open topic. By eliminating locked topics from the search we might be making to harder to find information and not easier.

Things will stay the way they are -- at least until we upgrade to phpbb3.0 in the near future.
