that's assuming the camera will guess the right aperture. i've tried this failsafe approach in the past when i was first learning and came out with all underexposed pictures. it's safer to shoot panning shots in manual and set your shutterspeed and aperture yourself.

i love this thread. some of you guys are geniuses, i been tryin to do night shots and come to realize that its almost impossible without a tripod. got my tripod today, so hopefully tonight i can take some pics to see the difference.

yeah i use to work with photoshop alot, took classes for it and became really knowledgeable with it and would mess with it daily. but i havnt installed photo shop cs2 since i got my computer 3 years ago, since then i have been trying to just simply take better pictures and get what i want the first time.

What is a standard setting people use when taking close ups of objects?

I mean like aperture and shutter speed..
I understand manual..what is started for all of those while taking up close photos?

I turned everything onto manual, but I just couldn't manage to figure out how to get the pictures to not be blurry?
I couldn't get the lens to focus in on anything.

hey man i have a d40 as well. i had it since last december, but i went to basic training so i didnt get to play with it much until recently. but anyways i was online lookin for somethin and i found this site. i think its pretty informational.

I couldn't get the lens to focus in on anything.
when you shot manual you to check your settings every shot or especially when there is a possible change in lighting or angle.. usually I set my aperture to the widest and just play with shutter speed and ISO for lighting. To make it not blurry make sure you are in autofocus, otherwise you have to carefully set it up manually which often takes some time. When in autofocus sometimes you would have to half shutter few times or an extra few seconds until you will get your desired focus on the subject..
