I'll second Elijah... lighting is really key. Midday lighting is way to harsh, and I'm guessing you took the above picture between 12-2pm from the looks of it. Try shooting 1-2 hours before dusk if you're not an early riser 
If you're going for a narrow depth of field with an isolated subject, I definitely suggest picking up a nifty fifty (50mm f/1.
. They can be had new/used around $80-$100. Cheapest lens you will find, and it is definitely very good quality optically. Build quality might be lacking a little, but it's a great inexpensive way to do portraits and such where you want a narrow DOF. That's what I have used for almost everything that's posted in my Flickr account.

also READ UR MANUAL. heck they actually tell u what all those settings are for and when to use them. Most manuals pretty much explain the basics of photography.
snow romance how do you guys take off out there? im stationed in altus ok and they shut our base down because we had a little bit of snow. and are you a pilot or load master or somethin?
Leaving for vegas tomorrow morning and wanted to pick up another lens besides the kit one I already have. Found a 50mm 1.8 I, but I'm not sure if I bring my camera.. Would I be hassled if I walk around with it, more specifically in the lobby?
damn i want a fisheye...cant bring myself to spend that kinda money on a lense. i think im set with my 18-200, 50, and kit 18-55. i dont shoot as much as i would like to, cause school is beat and has 0 things to shoot. but when im home i do as much as i can
