I think it would be a cool idea, instead of blacking out the whole tale light and instead putting a design on the lights, like a cut out design! I was thinking a dragon cut out design on both tail lights! Can you picture it? I would like to see someone attempt that! haha...just a suggestion...i wanna test it out on mine but i don't have the skill...

Seems like you sand to a haze then reapply clear and repeat. Can't you just put the clear on the first time and leave
it? I don't get how the clear ends up shiny when the sanding makes it hazy.
Seems like you're doing the opposite of the result you want.
Wetsanding removes any high spots. Unless you're like a wonder spraypainter, it's not going to be smoothe. Wetsanding gets rid of highspots, clear coat fills in low spots. When you repeatedly spray then sand you level out the surface which gives you a super glossy finish.

I'm thinking that you'll end up with darker bands/streaks where some areas got more paint than others.

Help appreciated...
If you do light enough coats of VHT, you shouldn't have a problem with dark bands. I have done two sets of lights now and haven't noticed this problem. Just remember to take your time and do LIGHT coats of spray.

After repeating the wetsanding/spray clear process several times, when does the
glossy surface appear? I'm confused b/c in previous posts, it's stated that after
wetsanding, the clearcoat looks hazy/cloudy. I don't get how one can get a glossy
surface after wetsanding when the surface has been "scratched up" by the
sandpaper even tho it may be 2000 grit.

I understand the methods to wetsanding. My confusion is how to get the shiny
surface as the final result. If say after the last wetsanding, do you spray the final
coat of clear and leave it? OR after wetsanding several times, does the surface just get shiny on its own?

Thanks.

I'm not the greatest sprayer by far. So what I did is after my final sanding, I buffed the lens with one of those two sided sponges and also used a rubbing compound followed by a few coats of Tech Wax.

after wetsanding mine I sprayed the clear coat on I used about 1 can per tail light. I made sure I did mine out in the sun with the sun directly on the rear of the car so I wouldnt get one tail darker then the other. Good Luck, its a pretty easy mod to do and mine are still shiny

Is it necessary to wetsand the tails? I have seen it done without the wetsanding and it looks the same.

I started to redo my tails today. I had them tinted but I didn't wet sand good and rushed the clear coat. It was fine for about 8 months but started losing it's shine and you could see some cracking in one of the bottom layers of clear coat. I sanded down the old clear coat, painted the tails darker and I have about four coats of clear on now. I'm going to wet sand tomorrow and do the last few coats of clear. I'll post pics when I'm done.

I should be posting pics of my re-tinted tails but I messed up. I ran out of clear coat and went to auto zone picked up a couple of cans went back and started spraying. As I sprayed black paint started coming out. I read the back of the cans and they said gloss black but for some reason it didn't process to my brain. Anyway, so I ended up having to sand off the black and redo some clear. Now I have to wet sand again and apply the last few clear. I should have it done by the weekend.

Alright im about to do this soon...this weekend prolly. I ordered VHT nite-shades w/ the pic of the guy on front, but I got some purple can instead (still VHT nite-shade) is this any different??? Also just to make sure i got the process right.... Tape it up or remove tails....clean tails with rubbing alcohol, spray NS (another coat if desired), spray clearcoat, 2k wetsand, more clearcoat if needed, 1k wetsand for bad areas. Is this right?

Yup. Just keep saying to yourself:
'Light coats. Patience. Plenty of water.'
Don't forget pics when you're done.

Any imperfections (runs, sags, dust, hair..ect) in the VHT will show up through the clearcoat. Your best bet is to deal with issues like that before clearing.

Remember: light coats!
Mine are dark and it took me probably between 15-20 coats of VHT. That's how light they should be.

I really like this look but does anyone have a pic of what this would look like say... on a blitz blue? I have the TYC lights, love the LED appearance but the silver look to the lights is a little it overwhelming and loud. And I do not like the plain stock red lights.

Any ideas?

^^Might be too dark for BBM. Just paint the TYCs red. That's what I did. (Refer to pg 3 of this thread.)
