My theory.... is that there's too many pros/cons and differing applications to using a 5spd vs. 6spd when designing cars.... to even guess at a specific correlation.

The reason for adding a 6th gear to a vehicle could be any of the following:

1) Better gas mileage when loafing on the interstate (example, v8's)

2) Allow use of 5th as more of an acceleration gear, in an extremely peaky motor.

3) Allow for closer spacing of the lower 5 gears to compensate for another downfall, such as excessive weight or lack of torque.

4) Achieve a higher top speed by hanging onto gear multipliers longer... (i think this is why the vette's got it)

etc. etc.

And I think the 2008 Viper gets garbage for gas mileage mainly due to it's 8.3L V10... it's a reasonable assumption that at 1500 rpm, it's got as many combustion events per second as our tC's at 3750, while sucking in 346% more air (based on size, given equal throttle position).

Which, ignores the fact it's 500lbs heavier... which can't help.

Ummm.....So correct me if I'm wrong but I dont think Japan is part of the US. Yes, some tCs are made in kentucky, but the motor was designed in ASIA. BTW you set no such parameters. You said "6spd is only good on cars that can rev really high," which is a very broad and incorrect statement. DUDE I am NOT saying a tC would better off with a close range 6 spd. I was merely saying that there are plenty of cars that dont rev high but utilize 6 speed transmissions very effictively (VIPER best example i can think of lol). Additionally, most of the people that say that they want a 6spd on here dont want it for a performance bonus, they want an additional higher gear to get better highway mileage. But it would never be worth the hassle of swapping it. If toyota had done such a thing from the factory it would've been sick. And it would be with the same goal as the afore mentioned Corvette. You have 5 performance gears and 1 relatively high overdrive for really good highway mileage. It will just be on a smaller scale as the tC doesnt have the torque for such long gearing.
what are you talking about kentucky? tc are built in japan and the u.s. just adds stereo, airbag and extra crap only.
