Get the drain plug washers from the dealership parts counter. They only cost like 25 cents. I use OEM Toyota oil filters, they cost me around 4 bucks each if you buy 2 or more.

Make sure the oil filter you use = p/n 90915-YZZF1
That is unless your going TRD filter which than = p/n PTR14-00000-06

via trdsparks or mcgeorges

in anycase, these items are highly recommended (haven't tried the TRD filter yet),
and yes I've been using the insanely expensive redline oil as well SquallLHeart so ur not along when it comes to spending insane amounts of $ for just motor oil (where in the bay and for how much did you get them for?).

On a side note, when is it suggested that we change viscosity oils?
I've been on 5w-30 synthetic since birth .

(shrugs) Hmm, I just get mine done by a shop nearby. I get it for like $15-$20. It's faster and I don't get dirty.

As far as changing viscosities, if you are staying NA I say never change it. I have seen many rattling toyotas fixed by switching BACK to 5w30

One thing I would like to add. Don't take the oil cap completely off. Take it off, but lay it over the hole at an angle. helps minimizing dust and stuff from going in.

And remember to replace the crush washer once in a while

whats a crush washer?

EDIT: woops i just read through this whole thread and found out...

Just some additional info:

Torque for the oil pan drain plug is 30 ft-lbf
Torque for the oil filter is 9.5 ft-lbf, or screw it on until the gasket makes contact with the seat, then tighten another 3/4 of a turn.

Or you can just go to autozone and pick up any socket wrench attachment for oil filters... thats what I have.

my only question with this write up is: is heineken the prefered beer for the oil change? Would it be alright if I substitute bud light? Would there be any negative effects with the change?

I use the filter wrench with the socket attachment on bottom. It looks to me like it is the smallest filter wrench around

Why the NEVER tighten it with a wrench? I'm just wondering cuz I used to have a tercel ( ). Changed the oil myself every time and used to tighten with the oil wrench. Sucka ran 230,000 miles and was still kickin'. That's why I buy japanese.

Anyway, I'm sure there must be a good reason because 2 people said to only tighten by hand.

when you put it on.. TIGHTEN BY HAND..

when the engine starts running and heating up.. it's gonna expand and then make a pretty hard seal... the wrench is only used to help remove and crack open the oil filter when it's been thru all that.. and for the most part.. is damn tough sometimes..

imagine how hard it'd be if you tightened it with a wrench..... yeah.... i don't think you'll want to kill yourself trying to remove the used oil filter.

Your car would gain 7 whp, and 5 lb-ft of torque
