Exhaust manifold stud length?
Does anyone know? I know that it sticks out 1" from the head but I'm not sure how far it seats in the head. Got to be at least 1/2" but maybe 3/4 ". TIA.

Thanks. I finally found a source for ss metric studs for 1/3 the cost of ARP. Not as nice as ARP but they should do the job as long as they're not over-tightened. $20 for 8 M8x1.25x45mm dual studs with washers and my choice of ss or brass nuts. About 1/4" longer than stock.

I already shared the source in another thread but here it is again:
http://www.ahwooga.com/detail.asp?id...KIT--STAINLESS
You can also order directly from MMS & Accessories instead. I called and they assured me that these Datsun studs are M8x1.25x45mm overall length. They also offer 5 studs with flange nuts for $20 as well as many other sizes of ss studs, nuts and bolts.
Since I haven't removed and measured a stock stud yet I'm guestimating the correct length but I'm pretty sure that they're between 38 and 40mm long. I want longer studs so 45mm should work well.

I'd rather have the ARP studs but strain hardened 304 is expensive and I don't think that the extra tensile strength is necessary for this application. I simply want longer, corrosion resistant studs that permit full thread engagement for the nuts with 316 Nordlock washers.
When I first installed my turbo I used spring lock washers with loc-tite and every bolt and nut came loose within months. On disassembly it was observed that every spring washer had lost it's temper from the heat. I then installed Nordlock washers and every bolt and nut is still tight after over a year. The only Nordlocks I could find locally were zinc plated so I've ordered 316 SS Nordlocks to replace them.
My goal is to have all SS fasteners for the manifold, WG and turbo. My one remaining question is whether to use SS nuts with anti-sieze or brass nuts dry. I've read about galling with SS fasteners and the use of brass, copper or bronze nuts avoid this problem.

Well Fred I'm no metal expert so I can't comment on this subject but SS with anti-seize sounds viable. Personally I checked my setup weekly just as precaution too catch anything early. I changed most of my bolts, nuts, washers to grade 8 or SS so I guess we are in the same boat so to speak.
Just a question do you have a Fastenal retail store in your area. I'm in Central Florida and they carry grade 8 and SS at decent prices. Check out Fastenal if you haven't already.

I think I'm gonna go with SS nuts and anti-sieze. Copper, brass or bronze wouldn't look good on my shiny new SS manifold. I'll use flange nuts on the mani/head studs but regular hex nuts elsewhere. I found a source for turbo/mani studs and bought 8 of them for $20 today at MD Metric. Unfortunately they didn't have the M8 studs I need. I can get M8x45mm studs for the head from MMS&A but they are too long for the wastegate and dump tube. I may have to cut them down.
However, I may have found a source for ARP SS studs for under $3 ea. The description is messed up though so I have to call them tommorrow to confirm the actual sizes. Allen's Fasteners, fyi.
I checked Fastenal but came up empty. They did supply me with zinc plated Nordlocks last year but didn't carry them locally in SS. McMaster-Carr does but they're about $2 each! I still bought 15 of them.

I guess this is still a pretty good deal. You can buy any qty you want for about $7 per stud/nut/washer.

Well, I got my $15 ARP manifold studs today. Broached allen head tip, correct length, polished, strain-hardened SS studs. My only concern is that ARP didn't adhere to the DIN specs for these and they have a 15mm threaded tap end (head side) rather than the DIN spec'd 10mm. I hope that the holes in the head are deep enough. If Dezod's studs work, these will work since they're the same. If the blank doesn't bottom out in the blind hole as intended, I'll cut them shorter so they do.
The shorter ARP studs I bought for the wastegate are similarly non-DIN compliant having a 12mm tap end instead of 10mm. This may work for some manifolds but they were too long for mine. I cut them down tonight and they now fit perfectly. I was worried about cutting hardended SS but they cut fairly easily with a box framed hacksaw and the thread end shaped nicely with various files.
I'm stoked about having a SS manifold with all SS hardware, Nordlocks and Inconel wastegate body. This setup should be 100% maintenance free for many years.
An interesting footnote is that the ARP SS studs are highly magnetic. I've read that cold-working SS can cause this so I'm not concerned. The other non-hardened SS fasteners are barely magnetic, as expected from 300 series SS.

You know it... whatever it takes.
Cool. Did the blank portion of the stud bottom out in the head or did the threaded tap end bottom out first? I can't wait to get this new all-SS manifold/fastener setup installed.
