Valve slap?
OK when hitting full boost and changing gears the person who helped do my install claims he hears valve slap. Its like a small clank after changing gears. OK info on the kit its a zpi stage zero with the wastegate dump left open. He says that's the problem. Aside from a stripped nut causing oil to leak from the return the car ran, idled, sounded smooth as could be. Is this "valve slap" a real issue with our cars? The guy that helped is going to school to be a mechanic but he mostly works on VWs.
put an oil pressure gauge and see what that is. most of the time you will valve train noise when the car is cold then quiets down but if your hearing it from in side the car you might have a problem. usually what cause valve train noise is valve lash which is easy to check. but from my under standing from owning motorcycles that have shims as well is that when valve train starts to quit down is when u need to worry and gauge the cam caps, bucket shims, etc. reason they get quit is because the valve seat gets worn down and causes a tighter clearance between the cams and the shims.
Honestly I think he's just paranoid I don't really head the sound. Basically he's saying the pressure being released so fast is making the valves slap around. I'm trying to figure out if that happens with boosted TCS and if the waste gate closing makes a sound. I've had factory boosted cars but this is the first one I've boosted myself.
So I guess waste gate closing doesn't make a sound? Or maybe i worded my post wrong and no one knows what im talking about lol. Well getting thread fixed and waste gate dump welded into downpipe and hope for the best.
i have a ZPI stage 1 and had something similar to this and and my car ran funny when it started happening. i was running a tial wastgate so i went to see what it was and i took off the wastegate and the valve of the wastgate broke off the stem so when i rolled into boost some how it didn't spike i dont know how but it just ran like crap. so you might want to take the waste gate off and have a look just in case.
