JL Audio Stealthbox for Tc. Your input needed.

Wow. I'm disappointed. What was JL thinking? This particular stealth box goes against nearly everything they've done soo well with the other vehicle designs - minimal interior modification being the most prominent. Granted, I haven't heard this tC design, but I'm shocked that after all the input they received from US, the design they finalized is hardly what we asked for. There's several other options they could have chosen that require less interior modification, and sound as good if not better than their design. In my opinion, they should have done something like the eD (flat on the floor), or factory Bazooka design. JL could have easily done two versions...the floor model with a few of their 6w0s, and then the side mounted one with a single 10" or 12" - several models with W3, W6, etc. The tC has soo much cabin gain, a few of the 6w0s would have done the trick for the SQ type, and should you really want to let it rip, the side mounted 12" design would have worked as well.
JL's a smart company, and I'm sure they've considered these options, but I'd love to know why they didn't go with them...

The Stealthbox is loaded with a 10W3v3 which seemed to be the woofer of choice on here.
A side mounted 12 would hardly be "stealth" in a tC.
JLTD- Thanks for your response. Please don't take offense to any of the comments of mine, as I mentioned before, I'm 100% sure JL looked into all the options. Speaking from experience - trying to squeeze a pair of 12"s in the most 'stealth-like' fashion - I know how difficult this task is. I had to sacrifice the spare tire to obtain the required air space. My objectives were to 1st sound damn good, and 2nd, hit over 135dB for IASCA - and I did so by a large margin.
My previous car - a Honda DelSol had JL's stealthbox (loaded with (2) 'small' 8"s), sounded great, and didn't disrupt the interior at all, replacing the useless rear cubby compartments.
From JL's site: "... spare tire installs onto the Stealthbox®, raising trunk floor 2.75 inches from stock height. A special kit is provided to replace and raise the entire trunk floor..." That sure sounds like interior modifications to me, resulting in the loss of precious, significant trunk volume, and disrupting the transition between the rear cargo floor and rear seats when folded down.
I still stand that the easiest options were already mentioned, and JL could have taken the stance that the issue is "cone surface area/motor", and used a few of the 6w0s to maintain depth (~5"), as any of the W3, W6, or W7s are too deep to fit in this location - (passenger side of the spare tire). Please see this thread and picture of (3) 6w0s:

"Stealth" literally means "undetected", and I'll give it to JL that they did design this box to be well hidden. I would have preferred a different design that wouldn't raise the floor of the cargo area, and/or a similar side mounted design to the Bazooka, featuring a better (10" JL) driver.
See you at CES!

you're beating a dead horse.
he's alreay said that they have made corporate decisions not to do boxes with less than a 10" driver.
- a bazooka like enclosure? well maybe..but bazooka already makes one. no need for a "me too" product. and with a jl version you probably would lose the utility of a rear fold down seat.
- the side mount...logical, yes..but they prob could not fit 10" speaker in that side compartment without compromising the required air space.
- under the spare, well that wouldn't be my choice but it was theirs and will probably work for their market.
their market..it's NOT you. It's not someone tring to hit record dB for sound competition. Its a guy/gal who goes into a quality audio install shop..probably never even heard of scionlife..and wants to get an aftermarket radio installed professionally. he's not a diy type..he's got a little extra coin to spend. he doesn't care about the child safety seat. he feels comfortable forking over a couple thousand on head unit, speaker upgrade and the subwoofer his audio 'specialist' sells him on.
he could care less about the little extra 'bump' in the flat floor as long as the sub gives him the extra 'bump' for his tunes.
if they have any challenge selling this product it won't be due to some spacers that raise the trunk a couple of inches. it will be due to price range that is out of the comfort zone of most scion owners. this is a shoestring budget priced car...
and fwiw, that's my custom stealth box with the 6w0's so i think they do a superb job when it comes to components.

The "kit" that is mentioned comes with a new CNC routed floor and foam blocks that match the shape of the two factory foam pieces (you can still use this for storage). The seats still fold down and the whole trunk can still be used. If you had to lose the spare, it would not be a Stealthbox
I think the problem with the JL stealth box line is that they are trying to cram in their traditional (large) drivers into spaces they can't go(TC stealth box)
What they need to do is prodduce a driver that will fit this application first, and then go from there.

I think I remember seeing somewhere in this thread that it limits the degree that the rear seats can be reclined...
no way it will def be above 800. you have a box the size of a spare tire, foam pieces, a fake floor, amp sub and shipping? just the amp and the sub is like 400 tack on all the R&D and stuff and your looking at 800.
