Well I get my avic-1 tomorrow so I wanted some hlpe before I tried to install it. DO i need the install kit from metra in order to close the gaps since it is a larger unit at 7 inches? Can't wait to get it tomorrow

Chances are you will need some kit to close the gaps on the 2 sides. The unit itself
should still be standard double din and the factory Pioneer deck is wider than that.
I got mine custom made when I got my AVN2454, I will be switch the AVN out for the AVIC-Z1 also next week along with almost all the accessories. I still can't find a place that has the ND-BT1 in stock.

Maybe, these units will include some sort of trim ring to cover those gaps, iono?

But I think metra or some company has a kit to fill those gaps anyways.

yes the kit does come with a trim around it. The unit is awesome. I love it but I am also waiting on the bluetooth adapter. The only place I found that has it is crutchfield.com and they r selling it for 100. I also am gonna wait for 2 weeks to install it to and hopefully someone will learn how to do the bypass.

I'm not too worry, usually Pioneer will release the way around it in some of the
"forum" to boost their sales. They always do that. It's just a matter of time.

I got to test it out at my Tweeters the other day and it was awesome. So many features.

Couple question for you Jineration...

1) Does it come with a mic that lets you voice command not only nav functions but other functions like dvd, cd player?

2)Did you get the ipod hook-up?... if so how well does it work?

3)Not a question but a demand! .... get those pics ****. Haha.

Jineration, i have mine but I am reluctant to install it. I am waiting for the bypass. Any luck with that one? I am also waiting for the ipd adapter and bluetooth adapter. Where did u install ur mic? I have a few ideas but not sure. I want it to be hidden but pick up my voice well. Pictures please. Did they use an install kit to install it?

yes it comes with a mic. i mounted mine on the drivers side visor and it picks up all of my commands without a problem and also does not get in the way too much.

and yes i have the ipod hook up and it is alot easier to use than the previous avics.

You have to modify the stock mounting brackets to getthe door to close without pressing the eject button in since the buttons are on the bottom.
It does come with a trim ring, but you almost have to make something custom to fix the gaps on the side.

it also.... barly clears the bottom when you open the unit... but it clears.

I attempted to install the display bypass box to see if that would alow me to watch while i drive, but that did not work so dont waste your time. I believe this unit will be a tough one to try to bypass, but im sure someone will mastermind it.

I did just purchase the motorized radio cover kit to install and make it eaiser to open/close the door without touching the buttons. even with the radio moded 1/4 inch back you can still run into a problem touching the keys.

i will post pics later today is no one has already.

ok here are some photos

before turning the car on

the startup seq. takes about 20-30 seconds

sirius screen

full map screen

map functions

opening seq... half way through sweeping motion

completely open

av funtions

ipod screen

ipod playing with no info provided

ipod playing with info provided

navi views

rear view with map

performance views

map split view

mic on visor

just clears base when open... side view

front view.

Also, like i said you need to mod the brackets to get the door to close.

I also removed the bottom screws on the bracket and put in bolts to make the unit more secure...

Damn, those gaps on the side are pretty big huh.

That won't stop me from buying it but I'll definetly need to find a solution for it.

How did installation go? Besides tapping into the wires already back there, what others things did you need to connect for the vehicle dynamics to work?

And one question you forgot to answer was if the audio functions work with the voice recognition.

Other than that, awesome pics man.

Just the speed sensor wire hookup and that was really it. And the voice recog works to switch between av sources.... "Ipod" "sirius" "map view" "poi" and also alows you to search folders and files that you save to the 10 gigs in there. You can pretty much control everythingbut the volume. If you dl to users manual and look around in chapter 17 it tells you all about the verbal commands. Good luck, and if there are any other questions let me know

Yes Pioneer is using Gyro sensors now so it ain't that easy to get video bypass
but it's the same old thing with the AVIC-N2, if sales goes down, they will release
the work around, manufacturer are not stupid, if they have a lock down, they also have a bypass that works with what they need, it's a matter of time. That is why I still haven't installed my AVIC-Z1 yet, still sticking with my AVN2454 with grounded wires so that I can get full nav features, don't really care about watching
video while I'm driving, I care more about using the full features on Nav instead.
