tC owners, post your MPG please.....
I made the first leg of my trip to Miami today (620 miles) and broke the 1k mile cherry on my tC. Fastest I've got it so far is 100mph, just cruising, not even trying, with wife, son, and baggage in tow. As a matter of fact, I didn't even realized I was doing 100 until my wife nodged me with her elbow...hint..hint... Mileage has been a disappointment, I am on my 4th tank of gas and on the highway I am getting around 29mpg which is right on, but on the city is only about 15mpg. Now that I broke the 1k break-in period I am hoping fuel mileage will improve. Then again, I have a lead foot when it comes to city driving. On the highway I take it a bit easier as there aren't as many stops and go's.
So far so good, nothing out of the ordinary to report on the long trip. The car is doing great, knock on wood. Will keep better track of my mileage while in Miami and on the way back and report it here.

something is wrong for your post,
Automatic should be using more gas, and Manual should use less.

i am trying to convince myself to get a tC instead of xA. gas mileage is the biggest thing since i need to drive like 100+ miles a day to work.

i have 210 miles on my manual and i have over a 1/2 tank still left....the car had 10 mile son it when i got it though. so hopefully i will get around 380 miles out of this tank. I've done about 70% city driving too...so those numbers should get better.
my WRX averaged about 17/22

so here's my savings on the tC, since the tC isn't out, I use the Solara 4cyl - the Solars is like $3000 more, but it gets 4 more MPG... so we'll call it even...
the '05 Scion tC stick ('04 solara) is 40 cents/mile here
my '01 BMW 325i auto is 54 cents/mile here
BUT, BUT, BUT
a '04 VW Jetta TDI stick is 36 cents/mile here
so you can see that my savings from 54 to 40 would be 14 cents times the 18,000 miles per year that I drive... yields about $2500 in savings... but a jump to the TDI would give $3200...
but if you drive 100miles / day to work... that would be over 25k miles/year just for work... so we'll put you between 30 and 35k per year... so let's say 32.5k... just a guess... but it shows that you would save 4 cents/ mile for the TDI or $1300... just over a hundred a month... so let's guess that you make $10/hour... that would be over one whole day a month you took take without pay... let's say you make $20/hour... you could take a day off without pay every other month and still come out ahead... there is a huge tuner world for the VW GTI TDI... guys are breaking 50mpg and getting 0-60 times comparable to the tC... it is worth a look....

from consumer reports xA test, even the epa rating for auto has better gas mileage, but the manual does turn have better gas mileage than the auto. so i thing in tC case, manual actually does get better mileage than auto.

don't ask why they chose this, but that is the way it is... the first gear in the stick is REALLY low... almost 15:1 drive ratio... the auto is only 11:1... so off the line the stick will smoke the auto... but the top gear is like 3.3:1 for the auto vs 3.6:1... don't quote those numbers, search for ratios I did the calcs in another post... but anyway that difference will mean more rpms for the stick in top gear...
also this is why the auto will be MUCH slower than the stick...
what i'll miss most out of my 03 sentra gxe was its gas mileage, about 5 miles more per gallon. am i worried about gas prices.. yes .. but it also does depend if you have a lead foot or not.. i know for the first 1000k .. i will be taking it easy on my tC.
there are so many variables that control gas mileage...
windows up, sunroof closed, a/c off (vent is fine, heat is fine), flat land driving, cruise control on, 65mph is better than 75mph is better than 85mph and so on(peak mileage is around 40 to 45mph constant speed), no load in the trunk and no extra passengers, proper tire inflation (correct pressure is written in the manual, not on the side of the tire)...
are you starting to get the point... but there is nothing that you can do to make your engine get better mileage... no "tornado" insert or special gas additive is gonna change the fact that your car has a specific aerodynamic drag and that drag requires a certain amount of horsepower to go down the road... and your engines timing, valve train, basic overall design will control how effectively that fuel is turned into horsepower...

I considered the TDI... Then I saw one.. I think I would look better driving a scooter then a VW. If I was concerned with the "Best mileage" I's be drving a Prius. 30mpg is pretty good for a sporty looking car.
Sorry about the ramblings.. I just retain a deep hate for anything VW.

search any of the news stories and you'll see that the TDI is beating the Prius in MPG... the average Prius owner is seeing upper 30s... CNN, MSNBC, any news site should have the stories posted of owner's frustrations...

Depend the lbs boost i have.
