I think it actually may still have the chip - just not the keyless entry and such. Not 100% sure though.

Yup, the valet key has a chip in it. I went to a hardware store and made a copy of the orginal key as a spare. The copy will unlock the doors manually and even turn the ignigition to ACC to power you radio, etc. If you try to start it with the copy, the car will sound like it's trying to start (dead battery sound)

When I worked at a Honda car dealer in california, someone stole a new civic si when it was delivered from the car carrier. They staked out the parking lot and when the driver of the truck pulled it on the lot, the key was left in it and they ran up and took off. It is common for the delivered cars to sit unwatched sometimes, they need to pay more attention. They did catch the civic thieves, I would like to see how and what happened with the tc though.

How to tell when you shouldn't be able to start the tC:

If the light I'm pointing to in this pick is blinking - you cannot start the car. It will stop flashing when you insert the key.

Took me about a week to figure that out. I was like "wth is that light flashing for..." even though I knew it had the chip and such. I kinda knew what was going on, but didn't really get it yet.

The microchip is in all the keys regardless of whether you have the alarm installed. That is a standard feature.
