Default Transmission ?

What exactly happens when the clutch is not depressed and a driver attempts to put a 6spd manual transmission into gear? I only ask because its happened to me on two separate occasion. How much damage am I looking at long term?
I only ask because it just happened to me again a few minutes ago, I turned on the car to move it about a foot back I turned it off and I slid it into first and it grinded. I just want to know if I should put aside for new transmission parts.

Boooom. End of world

/srsly don't know what happens inside the gears or how bad damage is. Don't make it a habit and you'll be happy with it. It should be able to take the low speed grinding, it's when your going 50mph and missing gears that I imagine you'd be shaving/causing more wear.

Thanks. If I keep the car I might end up rebuilding the transmission to handle some more abuse. This transmission has definitely been a learning experience comparing it to my boosted civic & GSR. I wonder if the 1st gen tranny was as sensitive?

You will be fine, most likely you're just taking some life off the synchro's. As long as you do not do it often it will be fine.

Synchros grinding into the transmission. As long as your not jamming it very hard it wont cause too much damamge as long as you dont do it very often.

Grinding gears sucks and is possibly one of the worse automotive noises in existence.

Also, not sure how others 6-speeds are, but mine does not want to go into 2nd when it is cold. If yours does that, be easy on it until it is warm.

All manual transmissions I've ever drove don't like certain gears in the cold simple solution let the car warm up most the time that seems to make my car shift nicely

I've had it where it was more stiffer but in this case 2nd is a pain in the ___. I usually let the car warm up, but it doesn't really help. Hell sometimes it will crunch into gear when cold too.

Default Update

Thanks to all that replied I've been searching on the internet to get a better understanding of how the transmission functions. I've come across a few links that others might find useful. If anything else it provides information.

The link directly below is a video on how a transmission functions & after that one ends another will load showing you how a clutch functions.
