Alpine Head Unit Defect
went to dealership today with no success.. i told them that southeast toyota should know but they didn't budge. but one thing i found out is that the rattling problem with the door trim surrounding the window control is under investigation from toyota
As much as we'd all light people to do their jobs, most employees (of any company) will only do the minimum to avoid getting fired. The key to getting anything done is to professionally require them to show you, in writing, how they know their fix is the right one. Since they obviously won't be able to provide it, ask them to get confirmation from a higher level (SE Toyota) and let them know if SET tells them it's not defective, then you want to see that message in writing.
You can also contact Scion Corp through their website. I had a nice long IM session with someone on their website, gave the person the specifics of my dealer and I got a phone call from the PR person at the dealer the next day.
Hope this helps!

I have names of the people at my service center... I didn't get any names of people at SE Toyota because my local dealer got it fixed. If you want, PM me and we can figure something out so that your service dept can call mine and get on the same page.
So my service consultant called me and said there is no issue with my head unit and that Scion designed it that way. Hell no! I called Scion corporate and opened a case to help resolve my issues with my dealership. I asked if they are getting complaints about this issue or am I the only one and I was told this is a known issue that is being investigated and dealerships should know about it.
We'll see what happens.

I had the dreaded Alpine no right sub sound problem and talked to the service MANAGER at the dealership I go to. She did the usual and tried to convince me it was how it was SUPPOSED to sound! Well, I knew better and I am a determined little OCD guys so....
I printed out all of this forum post and took it in with me. Showed the service rep all the other people with the issue, the new product number and then made him sit in the car. I got the "I will contact South East Toyota as the forum says they have the info and get back to you." Four days later the new headunit was at my dealership waiting on me to bring the car in.
Folks, we all know there is an issue, use this forum to leverage the dealer! Also, when they were turning in my paperwork to be filed I saw an official looking set of papers from Scion/Toyota that individually addressed the known Alpine head unit problem AND the door panel/window switch rattles. So be sure to keep on your service guys and show them all the forum posts in here. Nothing like printed proof to torque them into doing their jobs!
Also- thank you to everyone that posted in here- YOU got my head unit fixed for me!!!

good to hear about the Alpine issue...
but kind of off topic...what is the door rattle issue?
I've read it many times before, saw the fixes, but never said anything because i dont think i ever had it....i want to say i'm one of the lucky ones...but i wasnt sure. and i didnt want to say i dont...jinx it and then end up having the issues
but if its gone so far that it is official....what does it sound like/when does it happen exactly? that way i can check and be on the look out for an official release from toyota/scion about it

My case manager called me and said she already spoke with the service manager and all I need to do is call him and arrange to bring my car in. I called him and he was a total d--- to me. Do I have to have my car serviced there or can I use a different Scion dealership after this issue is fixed?
You are never locked in to a single dealership. You can go to a different dealer each time you go in, I suppose. But don't forget, even the service manager has a boss. You can be polite while still showing your anger and explain the situation to the service manager's boss. If you're the only one complaining, nothing will change, but unless you say something, the next guy will have the same problem.
One other thing... Are you a woman? Odd question, but dealerships, by and large, are the most sexist places I've seen. It might take a few tries to get the same service from a dealership we, as guys, get. I wish it wasn't the case, but just what I've seen.

Glad they gave in and did what they should have from the start! Be sure you set the unit to tC mode and verify both "subs" work properly before you leave the service bay to ensure they got you the NEW Alpine unit not just a different original one.
BIG difference in sound quality with all the speakers working as originally designed

well its been 17 days since the dealership told me they ordered the new HU ans still no call to go back to have it installed.....either they forgot about me or they have some one delivering it by foot all the way from canada! ima have to give them a call and ask wats up with the long wait.
took time today to call scion and they contacted my dealership and my dealership said that they'll call california(?) and get back to me tomorrow. gonna assume that means that i'll have a new headunit in a week or 2
I had my unit replaced at the dealership (World Toyota/Scion here in Atlanta, GA), and everyone there was extremely helpful. The job was done FLAWLESSLY, and the sound on the new unit is an obvious and huge improvement. Clearly this is how it was SUPPOSED to sound from the beginning. Alpine also fixed the problem of the settings staying the same regardless of the source that was selected. You can now set the tone, balance and other settings individually by source, and the unit remembers them.
EXCELLENT resolution. Thanks to Scion Canada (Colin) for his help on this thread.
