xA Fuel Gauge and other Fuel Issues
At 3,500+ miles on my tank with the Tornado fuel saver. I'm getting to the point of hybridville .I'm getting around 39 MPG doing 11.9 on the tank .If it is 10.9 as others have proposed on the tank then it's 42MPG.I think I have proved my point on the Tornado fuel saver but, will continue .I have pictures of the install on the Tornado fuel saver and will send them upon request to each of u.There is another fuel saver that I am going to try at I will take detailed photos of this and it's at www.nationalfuelsaver.com if u want to try this as well .It uses platinium in the throttle body I think to save gas so it says..I look forward to trying this once I purchase it . This will be the first time I'm using this product and I hope it brings success.........

Calculating your actual mileage is very easy: Take the amount you've driven since the last time you filled up the tank, and divide by the amount of gas you put in this time. Use the actual amount shown on the pump, not the amount you think the tank can hold.
I'm using 11.9 as a control on my experiment .Then I calculate the mileage by dividing by 10.86.I have said once b4 I do not empty my tank or,run out of gas .My control is about 34mpg right now but ,since installing the Tornado fuel saver and changing my driving habits my mileage has increased using the 11.9 tank to 39.4mpg .Calculating using a 10.86 tank it goes up to 40.5Mpg .I'm getting 440 miles per tank rite now .In just a few days I will get another fuel saver .I hope that after this I can reach 44-45mpg and reach "hybridville",lol.
not yet zeo .I have been thinking about installing it once I finish the current full tank on gas .I am still getting 39-40mpg with the tornado fuel saver. After I install this 1 I will purchase some "solid"hubcaps to hopefully increase some more mpg .I think after putting the tornado fuel saver on 3 vehicles so far it's my best bet.I have had 1-5 mpg increase from it despite what naysayers say.
I have to admit that the tornado sounded like **** super science, but your results say that it does indeed work or at least does something positive. I might have to look in to it now.
You also changed your driving style, in what ways? My first thought is you must accelerate like a grandma now...as the saying goes. That's not meant to be derogatory, although now that I think about it, it probably was designed that way, but regardless it's not meant to be.
With 39-40 mpg you're knocking on the hybrid door. Most of the low figures I here for hybrids start at around 42-43 mpg. However, the high side can be quite impressive depending on driving style. With the Prius just for fun they try a technique called pulse and glide where they accelerate up to 45 mph, then let the car coast until they reach 35 mph and then accelerate back up to 45. I think those are the numbers they use, but the concept is accurate. Some of the owners testing with this technique, albeit rather unrealistic in real world driving conditions, can get the car over 100 mpg. If I remember the guys post correctly.

Hi zeo ,
I have heard about coasting a hybrid getting better mileage it's called, hypermiling .I owned a hybrid once b4 and 1 time got 96.1mpg out of a tank.1 thing that is kinda pesky is that the Scion doesnt roll a lot .I have noticed it has too much toe-in .The Toyota dealership said,"only if it wear out the tires can they do a alignment".I have gone up to airing my tires 34 psi all around and still no roll.Seems like it was made this way I dont know why?I remember I could even hypermile in my Dodge Caravan .Once I put this 2nd fuel saver on and make a few changes (alignment being one)maybe, it will b my ticket to hybridville. As far as my driving habits go I dont jackrabbit off of stop lites and dont use my braking hard.I drive normally 35-45% in city with 65% on hwy.On the hwy I dont drive over 65mph since, that is just like throwing ur money out the door.I normally drive around 56 to 58 mph .I usually did this b4 in my hybrid and once u get use to ppl passing u ,u dont mind.I guess I'm kinda odd in that way, lol.Of course ,if u get me into a Ferrarri or,something like that my driving habits will change. I think it's a pity that Scion said they couldn't make a hybrid due to what they said ,"it cost too much".I think Toyota and Honda r dragging there feet and seem like us in the 70's .Y'all ,China is about to embark on making cars.I have seen thier prices on these cars reach 10-12 grand for a regular auto.If anyone remembers the 70's as I do (now I'm showing some age, lol)Japan had eclipsed us do to thier fuel effecient cars of getting 30 mpg compared, to our 8-15mpg behemoths.I think that if the Chinese Auto industry gets off the ground they can produce a hybrid for about 14-16 grand .All I'm saying is watch out Japan ,this mite b a double edged sword .

Ya stop it with all the math. Look buddy all you need to know is that the xa is great on gas milage. i fill it up and spend 25$ and it lasts me a week and a half. christ how much do u drive. it has a city of 34 highway 38. its most likely 2 points lower in each case

We didn't determine the mileage of the first few tanks (just over 1000 on the ODO now.) Last week we calculated 35 mpg, mixed city/highway commuting, with temps between 30-50°F. During that tank, the needle hit the halfway mark at just over 200 miles. Contrast two heavy snowfalls this week, lots of stop/go traffic, temps 10-35°F, and I just hit the halfway tick at only 150 miles.
Keep in mind that the onboard comp takes time to adapt to your driving style, and drastic changes in acceleration habits may take awhile to be optimized.
We're road-tripping our xA next month, heading from the upper midwest to the desert southwest, CO, UT, AZ, NM. We'll be able to see how far we can stretch a tank in warm, high altitudes.
Still getting 35, this time with the Domestic Associate doing most of the driving. She doesn't go as fast, but likes to accel faster and brake later at stops. We're happy, and going as far on $25 as I used to get on twice that in my old Turd Hearse full-size V8 wagon.
35mpg .Of course she drove a little slower and I figure she didnt drive over 65mph ?I have found that in any car driving those speeds of 65+mph u mite as well be throwing ur money out the window.B sure to check ur tire pressure on it to .I guess I'm a little **** when it comes to that, lol.I pump mine up to 35 psi now all around.
I added up my average .and I'm getting 40.1MPG .Rite now on my current tank I'm hitting somewhere between 42-43 MPG .I have yet to get my other fuel saver installed and some other things like cruise control.Y'all I'm definetly getting into "hybridville" .I have just added a few things and made sure my tires were up to 35psi and change my driving habits.I have found it can b done but,I'm still working on it.I'n terms of going to the gas station I put about 36-39 bux of gas a month into it.Of course,I hope word doesn't spread too quikly it's interesting .I can't wait to install my other things into this beast. All I can say is ,"hybridville, here I come".
can I ask why, if you wanted hybrid performance so much, you didn't just buy a hybrid? It doesn't seem worth it to me to save all this money by not buying one only to not enjoy it at all because you're so concerned about getting hybrid mileage.
Maybe you should have just...kept that Insight.
Appreciate the car for what it is...it isn't a hybrid, and trying to make it act like one is basically futile. no matter what it's still going to be a gas car and you're going to have to drive it like it's made of glass to make it into "hybridville." That sort of defeats the point of buying a car to enjoy it, wouldn't you say?

"Fifty miles to the gallon with their knees in their chest,
Saving that gas for all the rest,
In a Yugo."
I want to live on a hill some day. I'll be able to coast downhill wherever I go, and hire a horse team to tow me home. ;)

I lost my Honda Insight in 2002 due to finainces and such.I have driven many cars in my time from this hybrid to a Porsche to a minivan but, the Honda Insight has given me a new love .True, I did not buy a hybrid ,I bought a Scion Xa .When I got my finainces back together again and then looked for a new car .I was ready this time with cash.I have to take into consideration my wife who only drives a automatic ,not both like me.I was hoping the cost of the hybrids would of gone down since it was 6 years ago since they debued.I was in a bit of a shock to find out they have not.I was a little angry at Honda's apathy so I looked to thier rival Toyota and discovered the Scion .At first I scoffed at them, I must admit .The only one's I saw were the XB's .After doing some research into them though I realized that they actually r better than even the mini-coopers by BMW.The XB gets better gas mileage and so on .I looked further on and came across the XA .In the thoughts of a former hybrid owner the Scion 's can give u a advantage swiftly as far as gas mileage.Like for instance let's say if u buy a new hybrid u still gotta wait to get ur money back. With the Scion Xa I have noticed it isn't that long.
I enjoy enhancing my car's performance like everyone else I just do it differently .Blame the hybrid for this I guess teaching me that there is another way.I have a friend who owns a Ferrarri 308 ,now that car is extreme it teaches u how to drive it not the other way around.I was suprized by this even my Porsche at this time did not do this. After selling the Porsche I was in other cars then 2000 hit and a new technology hit ,hybrids.I test drove the Prius and then the Insight .I got to admit, I was heartbroken with the Prius .After driving the Insight it spoke to me (no not in those terms,Im not that crazy,at least not yet, lol).I then drove it like the Ferrarri but ,the other way around .I was averaging 75 mpg in it and very suprised it was then that I saw the apathy in Honda.I can go further but,u would get sleepy, lol.I guess in buying this Scion XA I have been trying to prove to myself and others I guess that the Scion Xa can run the equivelent of a hybrid .I enjoy this car instead of wings and springs and such I just "think different".

hybrids are not cheap now because they are in vogue. To drive one is more to make a statement about the environment than to actually save money on gas, since the boost in purchase price doesn't offset the gas costs over the life of the car.
Currently the Prius is one of the hottest cars on the market with almost all being sold as preorders only. These cars rarely hit dealer lots unspoken for and as such many pay a premium for the car, even over MSRP.
Trendy will always cost more. Currently, hybrids are super trendy to have. Plus, they're still more expensive to manufacture and warrant than a regular gas car is. This problem won't go away until most of the models available are gas/electric combinations.
