That one has been out for a while. The same company is coming out with a double DIN unit. It isn't going to play DVD video, which I don't care about, but it will be cheaper, correctly fit in the double DIN area and not have that flip out screen.

yea it is cool "just to have" but I am also lazy.. and mapquest can only be wrong so many times... (it sucks when the directions are wrong when your destination is really far away!)

Yeah... I suppose the Nav is likely to be wrong about as much as mapquest, but at least with the nav, when you figure out something is wrong, you have a chance to correct things. My dad's Nav in the Prius (anyone know who builds the stock systems for Toyota?) has some funny crap in it. There is a little green tree symbol for parks and there was a super tiny one indicated somewhere near our house. One day I was driving around and decided to drive over to where it was as neither of us had been on the tiny little cul-de-sac where it said the park was. I drove back there and there was definitely no park there. just a funny little error I guess.

Had an audio installer tell me that the new pioneer stuff Avic-N2 was going to be "unbypassable" as far as watching DVD's while you drive...something about the safety feature being linked to the gyro? Anyone else heard that?

First off, we were mostly talking about the D1 - the double DIN unit. The N2 is the replacement for the N1 - the foldout screen one. I don't care too much about that one and anyway the D1 doesn't even play DVD video, which is fine with me. As for the unbypassable, my dad's nav system in his prius has some sort of feature where there is a dead reconing system as well as the GPS stuff. You can short the park wire to ground so it always thinks you're in park, but if you move more than just a little bit, it figures out you've got some sort of bypass rigged up and shuts things down again.

i got the Kenwood 2-din touchscreen, and it's COOOoooo. Although the installer needed to buy a new bracket, cuz the width of the unit is flush, and the length is short (about 1-1/2" both sides), and unit needed to be mounted recessed if the cover is still used. Other than that, the unit fits the car. The eclipse also looks great, but not in my price range.

thanks...

I'm sorry I even have to ask this... when you purchase a nav system... you have to pay for the unit and install butis there any sort of monthly fee for service or anything like that?

No there is no other cost other than updates if you want. Maybe if you live in an area that is still developing and new streets are still being added you may want to update the information disc when new ones are available.

my gf bought an AVN2454 for her TC. she's lived in Kansas City all her life and knows how to get places that she's been to a few times. however, if you try to give her directions ANYWHERE, you might as well give up or spend the entire time on the cell phone with her guiding her to the location. for people like that, navigation is more than just a convenience. but not everybody is like that. if i had navigation, it'd be about 70% fun, 30% convience using it in my own town.

Right - I've only been in Seattle maybe 3 years, but it's very rare that I'm going somewhere where I need help with anything but maybe the last turn or two. I second that 70/30 ratio, but if it is also a great head unit and it's enough fun, I just might do it. I'm glad the D1 isn't out yet - I'm dropping a grand on a camera first anyway, so it's not like I really have the money to spend right now.
