Hi All,

Just as a preface - I'm not at all mechanical. so please be gentle. I have 2014 xB with 80k miles on it. I've noticed that I'll hear an intermittent scrapping sound while braking. I've heard grinding brakes before and it doesn't sound like that or at least that severe,
but maybe this is like a foreshadowing of what's to come. Anyhow, I've had the car 2 years, never had any other problems with it, I sit in stop n go traffic a couple of times a month, but not every day. My (ex) Boyfriend was a mechanic, so I don't have a person I trust to ask about cars.
Anyone have an idea of what's up? Save me Tom Cruise!

could be two things...a small rock or stone caught between the pad and rotor, or the wear indicator is just starting to touch the rotor..either way, I'd have a mechanic look at i if you're not inclined to do it yourself...it's pretty easy to change the pads and rotors yourself though...

 

 

I'd just change the pads to be on the safe side...you dont have to have the rotors resurfaced necessarily if you are on a budget...is it the fronts makng the noise?

Brake pads come with little sheet metal bits called "squealers" and when the pad wears down, they touch the disc and... squeal.
You can just put new pads in, or you can put new pads and discs in - cheaper than buying a disc brake cutting machine - and keep the old discs to do weight lifting exercises in your spare time.
You will need tools, but it is something that can be done in an apartment parking lot.
Girls can do this too, it is not the exclusive realm of guys with tools.
