Default Time for New Tires...need some advice.

It's time for new tires. I have the OEM rims--the 16 inchers. They are the "step-up" from the hubcaps.

The tire size is 205/55R16. I know virtually nothing about purchasing tires, sizes, etc. I normally just get exact replacement tires. I was doing some digging on discounttiredirect.com and tirerack.com. I'd like to purchase 225/50R16's. Is this doable on those rims? From what I read, seems like it is? http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...PlusSizing.jsp

If it is possible, any tire recommendations for me?

If not, I'd still appreciate some tire recommendations to replace the originals.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Few things I would do in this situation would be to call your local scion dealer and ask them what the max tire size would be for stock scion rims, and maybe call either discount or tire rack directly. It always helps me to talk with someone that should have more knowledge....Make sure you purchase a nice set of tires, big difference between the cheapies and a real rubber!

I'd say 99.9% of the time this should be doable. Your rims are 6.5" wide and I think for most 225 tires, 6.5" is the minimum wheel width you can go with. When you find a tire you like check the manufacturer's website for specific tire specs for the 225/50/16 size. It will show you what wheel widths work with that particular tire in that particular size.

225/50-16 will fit on the 16x6.5 rim with no problems, although I wouldn't go any wider.

When it comes to tires, is being able to fully rotate them a consideration for you? If so, make sure that you don't get tires with a directional tread pattern. Other than that, just do your research and check reviews on TireRack & DiscountTireDirect. Also keep in mind that lighter is better when it comes to mpg, my mileage went down noticeably going from 21# tires up to 25# tires.

Good point about the tire weight. Have you looked at your pure highway mileage? Was that as affected as city driving? By the way, what kind of numbers were you getting before and after the tire/rims?

The first 42k miles on the OEM tires & steelies I was averaging 27mpg with about 90% hwy driving. Now I average 24-25mpg with the same amount of hwy driving. Keeping a watchful eye on the fuel consumption, I have seen that the hwy mileage is basically unaffected by the heavier tires, but stop-n-go city mileage has been crushed. Pure city driving I get about 14-16mpg, which is what caused the drop in my overall mileage.

55mph is the speed majority of cars should take because it gives the best fuel consumption. Any speed higher or lower is wasting energy..haha learn this in physics.

I agree, but I can't exit my garage, enter streets, or pull away from stop signs or signal lights at 55mph.

I think you need to get a longer garage.
