Default Strange noise on starting when engine cold

I have a 2008 XD that makes a strange sound when it is started. Sort of like blop blop blop then it runs ok. This only happens when the engine is cold and does not happen when the engine is warm. The car has about 75,000 miles on it. Do I maybe need new plugs or is the engine maybe starting with the wrong mixture or what?

could be S-SB-0046-09 -- brief engine noise at start-up.

You might want to check if your water pump is loose. I though I saw few posts a while back about loose water pump (shaken loose?) causing noise.

Thanks for the reply. Wouldnt a loose water pump make a noise all the time? I only hear this noise when the car has been sitting all night.

i had my 09 xd done long time ago with service bulletin S-SB-0046-09 for a brief cold start noise. I don't have much mileage on the car (15k) and the noise has not come back since done.

I don't know about the water pump but though I would mention it as I read several posts here talking about noise in engine compartment which was related to the water pump being loose and or going bad.

I've solved it!

Well, not me, my mechanic. They diagnosed it as a failing fuel pump. We explained the issue as noted above, but also noted that it was harder to start in the winter, or if the car sat for longer than a day. They packed the pump area with ice and recreated the problem. Replaced fuel pump 1 month ago, have had 0 start-up issues since!
