libima, if you are trying to extend your interval that far, make sure you pay extra for the TBN test. As far as wear metals, you could install a bypass filter, but it would probably cost more than you'd ever save in oil and filters... it would be cool, though! I'm used to diesels, and lots of people install bypass filters to take care of soot.

I plan on doing the TBN on future samples. I didn't on this one because I was planning on changing the oil anyway. I got the report back today it said everything looked good. Wear was around average, and they said I would be safe trying around 12,000 next time. I'll probably sample 2 times in getting there though, as I changed brands of oil this time.

I'll try to get the report posted this weekend, I won't have any way to do it before then.

Interesting... what kind of oil was that? Doesn't look like they use much moly in it, whatever it is. Would have been interesting to see where the TBN was.

I changed to Red Line 0w20 at 18,500 (8,500 OCI) because I was getting ready for a 1,600 mile road trip and wouldn't have had a chance to change my oil until a week after getting back. I'll go 10,000 miles on the Red Line and get another Blackstone analysis done.

I'm trying to decide whether I want to replace the filter at 5,000 miles. I have a 10 pack (7 left) of filters and most of a bottle of oil, so it would be easy to do.

It was Amsoil 0w30. you may notice that the viscosity was a little off after 10,000 miles. I've heard that this is a problem with Amsoil, other analysis i've seen of it show that it thickens up the longer you run it. I went with mobile one extended performance this time so I'll see how it goes for me, I haven't been able to find anywhere near me that sells redline products (other than the water wetter) otherwise I would probably go with that.
As for the TBN, I'm now thinking I should have done it too. Would be nice to know where it was. Oh well there's always next time.

I'm changing the oil every 4500 miles and have it changed 8 times already (bought it brand new Sep 09 but driving about 200-250 miles a day
So I use only Toyota 0w20 synthetic oil and filter. But never changed the oil drain plug actually.

I'll be doing another oil change soon. This will be 10,000 miles on RedLine 0w20. I'll send a sample to Blackstone for analysis and will, of course, post the results.

I'll be using RedLine 0w20 again. This time, using my new Assenmacher 64mm oil filter wrench so I won't bugger up the oil filter housing any more than I already have.

Gemini, why are you changing the oil so soon? Toyota recommended a 5,000 mile OCI even before they moved to synthetic. I don't know if they have updated their OCI, but at 7,500 miles, my last oil change showed very little wear and the oil still had good life in it.

I need to learn about oil... *sigh* Going to try and change my oil myself, for once, but I'm going in blind as far as what to get.

I just switch to Royal Purple 5w-20 from Mobile1 and the difference is almost like night and day. The xD's engine seems to run quite a bit smoother and feels a little more stable while traveling.

I think I'm stickin with the Purple from now on...

I just did my 5000 mile oil change today and used Redline 0w-20. Changing the oil on this car is really really easy. I did get the cap type filter wrench and it works great, with no issues removing the filter housing. Pay attention to where the rubber gasket goes on the housing though so you know where to put it back and get a fumoto valve to replace your drain plug. It is a cinch. I will take a sample and send it to blackstone when I do the 10000 mile change.

Since I was in the changing mood and at 5000 miles, I went ahead and changed out the manual transmission fluid to MT-90 as well. Also super easy. My buddy was helping and said it felt like working on a tinker toy because everything was easy to get to and find.

Friday, I sent off another sample to blackstone. This one had 10,000 miles on it also, but this time I didn't change the oil at the same time since blackstone said to try 12,000 last time. I'll sample again then. I'll post the reports when I get them back.

Got the next report back from Blackstone today. Monday I sent off a sample with 12,000 miles on it, so i'll post it when I get it back too.

Looks good... but what's up with the 5w30?

I'll be (hopefully) changing my oil tonight. I use my father's lift, so I need to make sure he doesn't have some incapacitated Benz on it. If all goes well, a sample will be heading off to Blackstone tomorrow. Mine's still a baby, though... only 28,500 miles (10,000 miles on the Red Line 0w20).

Trying to use up oil I already had... I know it isn't the most desirable choice for the xD, but it still fits the specs according to the owners manual.

Does it? Mine only recommends 0w20 or 5w20.

Just changed my oil an hour ago. Got a sample waiting for Blackstone.

Well I thought it did. Now I guess I'm going to have to go pull the manual out of the glove box and look again. Either way I dont think its going to make that much of a difference, maybe a minor effect on fuel economy, but not much other than that. I could be wrong though?

Running 5w30 for one oil change round won't do much if anything to the life of the car.
