Default Transmission troubles??

08 XD / 113,000 miles / automatic

I've been noticing lately that when the car is first started it drives funny.. hard to explain, all I know is that I don't normally notice it shifting and all of a sudden I do notice it. Sometimes it seems to rev out of nowhere, or if I take my foot off the gas at a low speed it has a hard time coasting. The other day I took my foot off the gas going about 20 MPH, and it revved before it began to coast. It was very odd.

Also, it's idling quite hard at stops and in reverse.

After the car warms up, I don't notice these things as much.

I did a ATF drain/fill at 90,000 miles so I find it hard to believe it would have to do with that... but maybe? Any ideas? God help me if I need a new transmission.

You're fine. It's acting normal when it's cold. This is how it acts. Sounds like a completely normal automatic transmission. Complete junk. Get a manual.

criminaltc is right, completely normal for an automatic transmission when cold. Shift patterns are designed to hold gears longer when cold in order to warm the engine quicker. They also will not shift into overdrive until the coolant temp has reached 140 degrees.

That doesn't explain the rough idle though?

Sure it does. What is your definition of "rough idle"? Just higher rev dropping and then picking back up? That's also a cold car. Otherwise if it's sputtering, that's not your transmission, that's your ignition/fuel system. Change spark plugs, coil packs, clean injectors, things like that.
