Very scary!!! Tire dry rot

Man, they must really overwork those tire factory workers, what with the 57 week years. I wonder if the calendars have Smarch or Octember.

Now im just curious cause they were really only talking about tires that have been sitting on store shelves for years but what about tires that are on a car that were used, but then the car sat for a while but needed to be used again? Are those tires at risk too or is it just tires that have sat with no use?

yeah i knew about this - i trust the tire shop i go to but before they mount new tires on the car i always check the year code.

as long as they're less than a year old im good

age is age. a car would be sitting on them for 4-5 years, and by that point they would definitely be flat spotted and probably ruined anyway. Not to mention a car that hasn't moved in 4-5 years? you would have a lot of other problems like engine oil, etc.

I can tell you something about motorhomes, the tires sidewalls crack and dryrot very easily from sitting. When I bought my RV, the tires had great tread, they guy said they were only 3 years old, but he didn't drive that much. So later on the Ohio turnpike at 65mph the rear outer tire came apart. It's a miracle I didn't wreck the RV or take out a few other cars on the freeway. I mounted the spare, changed my underwear, and did 45 the rest of the way home. When I got home I discovered 2 more tires had started chunking off the tread as well. Now I know to replace all 6 tires every few years.

Trust ABC news and 20/20 to make a whole mountain range out of three or four molehills.
Good point. Most of us probably buy online too, and most of the big sites turn stock over alot faster than the average mom & pop tire shop.

i checked mine, 1107, i was worried about my mom's tires because she just got them on sale from merchants, but they are just about as new as can be reading 1208.
