i have three layers of dynamat. i also ditched the washers on the strut tower like they suggest, and i also use the cloth reinforced rubber washers instead of the o-rings. i only notice the noise when it's colder outside.

That makes me think that I either did something wrong, or the one I have is defective. I mean, it is constantly LOUD!

On a side note: Every once in a while, I hear a slight 'ping'. It is barely audible unless the radio is off and it only happens when shifting the car hard, like accelerating hard, braking hard, cornering, etc. I don't know what that 'ping' is either.

I'm getting bummed out

i thought it WAS adjusted to a setting of 14mm?

its adjusted to 14mm, but the actual length from hole to hole is not adjusted so that it matches up with the holes on the brackets. THAT needs to be adjusted - having nothing to do with the stiffness.

The install is fairly straight forward, but the only place where I potentially could have gone wrong, is the order of the parts; for the strut mount bracket, I have:

nut>bracket>metal washer>cloth reinforced rubber washer (from home depot)>damper>bolt (the bolt being on bottom, nut being on top):

For the engine mount bracket, I have bolt>bracket>metal washer>cloth reinforced rubber washer>damper>nut (the nut being on the engine side).

Now I realize that I have the 2 connections slightly differently, could that be the problem?

It pings and pops/squeaks when its cold out. It was annoying everyday on my way to work until it warmed up in the engine bay.

ok thats a good piece of info. so the million dollar question is if the 14mm is preset why would the length not be adjusted to match the brackets prior to shipping?

that is indeed the question! It's those little common sense overlooks that makes you want to scratch your head!

All cars and kits are a little different the instructions do state when adjusting the stiffness to adjust length.

^^^ Switch the bolt and nut on the motor bracket. So if you have the bolt coming intowards the motor turn it so it comes out from the motor. Length is the most important part also make sure all nuts and bolts have been torqued down.

One quick question is it cold where you are right now?

Its in the mid to low 50s I'm on long island, in ny

I'll do what you said by the way. I thought it was the strut tower bracket that I had on backwards, but you're knowledgable about this, so i'll do what you suggested and leave the strut tower mount alone.

All of the nuts and bolts are torqued down nice and tight. I made sure of that

Cold temps around 40 or below will cause the unit to be louder than when the ETD is at temps above 40 or so. Also just like motor mount inserts the unit will break in and become less noticeable

Awesome. It seems to get a bit less noisy when it gets nice and hot as you're saying. Last night it was in the low 40s and it was louder than it is now, so what you're saying is 100% accurate.

I look forward to it breaking in though. For some reason, I only hear it when the windows are all up, with the window down, I don't hear it at all, nor do I hear it ever from the outside of the car.

I'm going to go switch the motor mount bracket bolt and nut. Thanks boxman, its a really great performance product, I just hope it breaks in so its not so intrusive! But WOW to the performance benefits, even on 14.5mm!

Not a problem I am just here to answer questions since Ingalls treated me so well when I was the R&D car.

just drive around for a bit the noise will go away quite a bit. i guess it does seem to have a break in period. but also the length adjustment is very important. mine got quieter when i adjusted it from 14mm to 12mm so the adjustment must have been closer to 7 inches after i made it.

but this thing on 12mm with a stock motor is great. almost no wheel hop at all and it shifts so nice.

Absolutely, the performance is just great. I'd highly recommend it for that!

I was pretty careful about the 7", but it seems for you that it got quieter when you got it a bit more precise?

Also, if you don't mind my asking, how long of a break in period do you think it has before it is completely broken in?

I had it on 12.5mm at first and then changed it to the current 14.5mm. I was trying to eliminate sound, but that doesn't seem to affect the sound all that much. In reality, I found that to affect vibration more than anything, but I used so much dynamat that I don't really feel any extra vibrations at all, on either setting! I might bring it back down a bit to maybe 12.5-13mm when the weather changes to warmer

i never really mesured the length, i just messed with it till the holes lines up the best. but i guess after i made the change from 14 to 12 it must be closer to the perfect 7". i would take mine back off and measure it exactly but it's barely louder than stock on a warm day so i'm leaving it.
