Yeah u can tell by the way the light is wrapping around ur face instead of creating highlights directly.

Just an opinion but make sure ur shooting in manual on ur camera and on ur flash. Also shoot with the flash not head on so it will create some shadows too. Shadows add depth and drama.

I have a 580EXII and 380EX, I can only shoot ETTL with the 380EX, I might work with just my 580EXII and work on shadows.

Yeah shoot with the 580ex II in manual. The biggest thing that opened up an easier world for me in flash photography is knowing that ur aperture controls the exposure and the shutter controls the ambient light in the shot.

my last shot for the night, I got my sdfisdfh reemed by a senior chief for making my bed with twin sheets and not full size sheets and have a full dress inspection now. Found getting shadows really do make a picture more dramatic, Im going to work with only the 580exII since I can control it, need to work on my white balance for sure, background is half gray and half white. so excited to keep learning stuff.

That half white and half gray is just light fall off and doesnt have to do with white balance. Also just a tip for the 580ex II, u can adjust it's zoom level from 24mm-105mm to kinda make it act as a modifier for the light. At 24mm it will spread the light and at 105 it will be like a spot light. Play with that and u will find it's a cool way to come up with some creativity or just control the light better. Also u in manual mode u can control the power output to really start getting creative.

I only really knew about the power output, I saw the zoom but really didn't know too much, I bought it used and just download a pdf manual for it. Im excited to practice with it and hope I get some good shots of my car and friends SI this weekend.

Since were speaking of flashes, for all the nikon guys, any reason to spend more money than an sb600? I cant see the point behind it besides speed for the stuff I'm looking for. Input is appreciated.

Unless you're doing studio photography I don't see a need for anything more than a 600. I've used a 900 before and besides more power and being able to fire other flashes I don't see a need for it.
