New AVIC-D3 Installed (Pics)
You could, but you'd have to set your destination first so it saves to the harddrive. Then you can take out the NAV DVD and put in your CD. But if you want to change or add a waypoint, you'd have to use the NAV DVD again.

ok so i received my D3 in the mail today and i want to install it myself, but i am a complete newbie to installing, not dumb just new. so i have the d3, bluetooth, ipod cable, and steering wheel controls. I read through the forum and know that u need other parts to do the install apart from what comes in the stuff i mentioned above. So to be 100% sure, what else do i need to buy to start my install? i have the upgrade ipod stereo from the dealer and a elemental designs 10" in sub, would those make a diff. and would i need anything else.
PS> is anyone considering making a DIY Tutorial Install for the D3.

I am in the same boat as this guy my D3 should arrive later this week and any help would be appreciated. Also help with the placement of the rear cam is also very appreciated.
I have the Z1 and I am very very happy with it. If you want to see some pictures of how it looks in my car, view my profile. I got the lights in the gauges and HVAC changed to match the Z1 because as far as I know, my unit does not have the option to change colors. That would be nice though.
As far as the antenna goes, I mounted mine on the dash right up in the front on the passenger side. You can hardly even notice that it's there, and it's installed very clean. And when you are navigating without the CD, it will only take you so far regardless if you have the places in memory or not. For example, you can not drive from one city to another unless it's really close... you will have to use the CD. Another reason I love my Z1 with the HDD.
My unit would have made the door hard to close, so I decided to remove it. I got the gap filled with some black carpet to match the rest of the car and it looks really nice. Overall, the unit looks like it belongs in the car.
That sucks that you don't have a search button. So you can't scroll through Genres or anything like that? Or do you mean, no search as in you can't type in the name and go straight to it? I scroll by genre which makes things easier. Sometimes I do the playlist thing - especially the "on-the-go" one. That helps out alot. You should also try to scroll up - my N3 didn't let me do that, but the Z1 does. Also, you can disconnect the Ipod, go straight to the song and then plug it back in. That helps with the quickness too.
The bypass is pretty simple. I highly recommend getting that - it's simply a ground wire (best if it's a braided copper wire to not over heat) plugged into one of the extra jacks, and then grounded along with your e-brake.
The PAC - do you know if they make one for the Z1? I want one!
Sorry for the long post. And once again... good job. It looks nice.
I've seen some Eclipse Nav installs where they mount the GPS antenna inside the center heating duct w/o any reception problems, so I am going to try mounting there first. My secondary position would be somewhere in the rear moonroof, but I have yet to look at the wiring situation.
As for the rear-view cam I was thinking about mounting it next to the license plate, right under the "ledge" where the plate lights & hatch open button are located.

If you bought your D3 from crutchfield, then I assume it came with the wire harness. Only tools you really need are wire strippers, needle nose pliers, phillips screw driver, and eletrical tape (if you're lazy like me and tape the wires instead of solder/heatshrink). As for the factory ipod upgrade, I think it's irrelevant to the install. Your eD 10" sub is powered by an amp, so you simply connect the audio cable from the amp to the D3.
