Is it possible to get some first hand responses and opinions between the Nikon D300 and the Canon EOS 50D. I don't want to start a Nikon/Canon war, but the internet can only give you so much info. without being able to handle them and what not.

Well I don't know much about that camera but it is in a different category than DSPR's. The s3 is a souped up point and shoot. In the point and shoot category I have been hearing glorious things about the canon g10. I have seen some of the pic from it and they are near dslr quality.

For versatility and learning the photography "craft" my vote will always go DSLR. These days you can get into DSLR fairly easy since there are numerous under the 1k range.
crap. I thought the s3 was a DSLR. Theres one in the PPC so I was kind of interested

Killer, get the 50d. It is a great body and great lens. Plus u won't have to worry about getting lenses for AUTO FOCUS. All canon lenses are autofocus so u don't have to spend extra for that feature. Canon bodies usually feel better too cause of their bigger size compared to Nikon.

You really would have to talk to someone who has owned both to get an unbiased opinion. The only other way would be to find one friend that has a D300, and one with a 50D and try both out for yourself. That said, owning either camera isn't going to make you take better pictures. That will come with practice.

I would say head to a Ritz camera and test both out. They let you handle the cameras and equipment so long as you seem like you know what you're doing. I find not a huge difference between Canon and Nikon, although others may disagree. There are minute differences like high ISO noise and menus that set the two apart, but hey, to each their own.

I wish I could just head to a Ritz. I would love to just browse at the camera goodness. Lol I'm waiting to head overseas for a year is the only problem. Hence why I'm asking on here.

The whole not having to worry about auto-focus is a biggie. Does the D300 body have a built in motor? I can't find a definite yes or no. The 50D is a bit cheaper then the D300, which is always good.

Very true that just going and buying a expensive camera is going to make you a better photographer. I've learned a lot just from this thread and tinkering with my D40. Manual FTW!

I believe the D40 and D5000 are the only bodies without the internal focus motor.

D300 does have the built in AF motor. I'm using mine with a 35-70mm f/2.8

I love it. Shooting in low light isn't such a PITA anymore compared to the D80 and D40x. Shooting at higher ISOs don't produce as much noise or banding as before. The also overall body feels much better than both the D40x and D80 (like more solid and much larger). Also having 51 AF points is extremely nice though I don't really ever use them much haha. I can't say how it feels compared to a 50D since I haven't held or even used one but shooting with my D300 now feels like second nature to me since I know where everything is now.
